Thinking Back

Recommended Posts

Thinking back to these past few years with Noah & Cody, us avid fans always complained about minimal usage of our stud big men. Due to this year not having an established big man, maybe this was Crean's idea lineup? A small, quick, shooting lineup with a rebounder underneath. Although, obviously we want Hanner to be very efficient, if he can just grab rebounds we will be more than OK.

At Marquette, when Crean went to the Final Four I read in certain topics (too young to know personally) that he had a small lineup. I am very optimistic about this season.

Feel free to correct me & leave your personal thoughts.

If Marquette had competed in the Big Ten at the time Crean was coach, I'd be more inclined to think small ball had a chance against the likes of Ohio State, Michigan State. Unfortunately, I don't think it has a snow ball's chance in hell.

That's a bit of a misconception.Marquette had three 6'10'' players, all of whom averaged in double figures.

We have one player with that size and he has a bad foot.

Im afraid we're going to get hammered on the boards in the Big.

Lets hope Emmitt was the steal of the century.

I don't think it's that black and white. Rebounding has nothing to do with size, and Michigan (for example) has contended with zero post presence.

Ferrell-Blackmon-Johnson lineup is going to be really, really difficult to guard...

I'm with this guy. I don't think it's as big of a problem as people are making it to be. We must have full guard crash buy in from our guys though. Michigan has proven this for several years. I think teams are just as concerned about what guard to try and stop as much as we are on where the rebounding will come from.

We aren't at a pure disadvantage here since we have a KILLER guard set to counter.

There's no question rebounding and defense will be issues. Just have to live with it... and make the best of it. It can be mitigated. It's not like we can't win 25 games just because we don't have a lottery pick in the post. Or anyone in the post besides Hanner.

We've got a good rebounding guard in Robert Johnson. He had ten last night. I believe Troy was the second leading rebounder last year so I would expect some contributions from him when he works himself back onto the court.

Jordan Morgan was 6'6"... Horford was an average player at best... Just saying

Morgan is 6'8 according to every site I've looked at and Horford was very average, but are both not better than what we've gotten out of Hanner? Probably an unfair question at this point in the season, but right now I'd feel more comfortable if we had one of those guys.

I found the same info. And, there was 2 of them.

I respectfully disagree with the size statement.

I saw more athletic players jumping over our guards backs all night even with good block outs.Last year the ball wouldn't have made it to that spot before the leading rebounder in the league would have snatched it up.Robert Johnson lead the team in rebounds last night which is great.Had Vonleh or Zeller been in the game I doubt that happens.

.Size definitely has lots to do with rebounding.I would argue that the reason Michigan didn't win it all was because of the lack of a physical post presence.Ky won the boards by double digits and Mich lost by three.

5 offensive rebounds  with 2 put backs and its the wolverines game.

The Miami Heat did well without a post player. A rim defender is always nice to have, but they can be a liability if team has shooters and can run the court effectively.

We are fine on the offensive end. We can spread the offense and create drive lanes for layups or drop the ball off into the post. We can throw it in the middle and kick out for open shots. Pick and rolls .... many ways to  score.

We have to prevent deep entry passes into the lane on defense and know how to defend if the ball does get inside. We can handle a big mobile post player. We will struggle with a big, physical front line. This will keep us from a deep run in a tournament, but we should be able to compete with most teams we play. Defensive rebounding will take everyone blocking out where they are in physical contact with the offensive player (the old butt in the gut rule of blocking out).

We can be successful, but we have to play our game and not lose track of what our purpose is.

Rebounding is a problem right now but it will only get better with Troy Stan and Emmit.

And as our new guys start understanding rebounding at this level might take another grade of commitment (or maybe they could always just out jump opponents in high school so they never had to truly commit).
Then u have Colin getting his legs back under him.

Definitely something we will talk after every game.
