Matt Painter being linked to UCLA. I think he might do well there. Might not get the studs but be able to get low 4 stars and high 3 stars just because of weather.

A lot of coaches will struggle with that roster if they have to take over. Hopefully he goes.

Wow...there doesn't seem to be a lot of great coaches willing to move right now, so it seems like UCLA is reaching, but it could work.

Put me down as saying this would be a personal disaster for Painter.  He's never lived outside the midwest and I think it would be extremely difficult for him personally to adapt to a west coast lifestyle/culture/recruiting.  Also, I find it hard to believe the UCLA fans would be happy with his style of recruiting.  They have their heads so far up in the clouds expecting stars on the court that the types of kids he's had the most success with won't fly with Bruin fans.  He's got it made in Laffy as long as he keeps contending for B1G titles.

True. Winning changes a lot and given time I think he wins but there. But from a personal level think it would be rough.

But their fans feel it’s a no brainer. UCLA isn’t as good as the PU job. Not just one or two but the majority of the thread is that. The Arizona job? They are scared of that? Makes sense. The school that will probably get hit to make a point or UCLA? They will take the one knee deep in a scandal.

I hadn't heard of the Matt Painter/UCLA rumors, so I googled it. The first thing that popped up was PU's fan site "Hammer and Rails." ... It said UCLA had pretty good luck the last time it hired a Purdue guy.

I chuckled.

Don't they realize Sam Gilbert died a long time ago? PU fans seem to bury their heads in the sand almost as much as UCLA fans do when they realize their hero was the benefactor of players in Westwood getting cars, money, etc.

If I’m Painter I wouldn’t leave. He’s got a job in Purdue for as long as he wants/keeps it up and seems to like it. Almost similar to Pat Fitzgerald at NW, could be set for life with where he’s at or he could take a massive risk at UCLA for a program with sky-high expectations. He’d likely have to adapt his coaching style which would be hard and it’s not like Purdue’s that shabby of a gig either no matter what us Indiana fans may think.

At UCLA I think he could get enough of a boost recruiting to break through and win a NC. That would be the only reason. Doubt he’d ever have to go to option J there

To be honest I think his coaching style would fit well out there good. I am not sure he could hang recruiting wise but he wouldn’t have to pull in Calipari style classes. He has flirted in the past with leaving due to the pay and building issues Purdue has. His assistants aren’t getting paid well. He wouldn’t have any of those worries at UCLA.

I am sure he will. But PU won’t come close to UCLA if they wanted him.

Sure, I get that, but it also comes with a lot of other things that Painter may not be that interested in.

I don't know though - Mitch seems to care a lot more. I remember what that was like...

I have no idea how he would do out there, but recruiting might be a tad easier than at Purdue. The guy can coach! What he's done at Purdue the last few years has been remarkable. I had completely written them off this year and yet, here they are about to share a conference crown. That said, you're probably right about the culture fit.
