Yay, we got a break for once!

Think we got UNC at the right time too. They were coming back from Portland playing 3 games in 4 days with Bacot nicked up. I don't think we win that game with who UNC has available and who we're missing.

If it were out of the game, why wouldn't an offensive player just bump his way into the lane?

Conversely, what keeps a defender from undercutting a player if there is no block/charge?

I mean it really isn't that difficult. There would still be offensive and defensive fouls. But, offensive fouls would be much different. It'd really just be fouls because of the extension of the arm, clearing with elbows, hooking, out of control rumbling and bumbling like a fullback. At the same time, defended couldn't just purposely get bowled over and get in the way. Literally anywhere on the floor you can't "impede" the path of offensive players... UNLESS, the defenders decides to get ran over in the paint. It's stupid. It'd make the game much more simple and free flowing.

We can speculate all we want, but the results are the results. I thought IU should have won a national championship in '75 if not for Scott May's broken arm. But IU didn't and the result was a loss to Kentucky. Revisionist thinking does no one any good.

I’ll be honest, I have mostly blocks (or flops) there, but 6 is my issue with the rule in one play. The dude isn’t playing defense. He’s gaming the system and it almost got himself and the offensive player hurt. He catches himself out of position and just stops in the shooter’s landing area. He also established his position after the shooter began his gather. If not for the current interpretation of the charge/block rule, I’m not sure doing that ever comes across the defender’s mind.

I want defenders to play defense, not try to trick the refs into thinking they’re getting run over. It isn’t “taking one for the team” like the Wisconsin’s of the world get their rocks off to, it’s dangerous and it isn’t basketball. A lot of times, I’m not sure how a guy taking a charge is any different than undercutting on a rebound or outright tripping someone. I do understand that there are plays where an offensive player lowers a shoulder and just blows through someone going to the basket, I just think the defender is given the benefit of the doubt wayyyyy too often.

I’m more concerned with the bang-bang plays at the basket than anything, btw. I think charge/player control fouls are relatively reasonably called around the perimeter.

It wasn't mandatory for you to participate but it seems you enjoyed speculating for a moment of what could have been in '75.

Good and great wins against UNC and at Xavier, respectfully. I can see that. I can also see where they are and where we are currently. Happy we have those on our resume. We might end up really needing them on Selection Sunday.

Always need them come selection Sunday.   Quality non conference wins.     Probably go through a ton of teams and say they caught so and so at the right time glad we played them when we did.   Season is long

My point was what might have been was irrelevant to what actually happened. Timing means a lot in all things. It has shaped my life for sure. This team as currently constructed has a lower ceiling than the one that started the season. Our opponents going forward won't care who is missing from our lineup. We will win or lose with who we have. The record book won't care about anything else. Yes, I thought the '75 team was national championship good before the May injury. But the injury happened and IU was not good enough to overcome it. That was the reality and I can accept that. This season will play however it does with who we have available as will every other teams. If this was a closed or by invitation only thread, then I apologize for inserting my thoughts into it.

My point was I'm glad we got those wins to add to our resume. To elaborate, I don't think we beat them if we meet them again this season. I personally don't care what our opponents or their fans think. I care how we look and perform as a team this season.

Would have been nice to have back-to-back undefeated teams, although having one loss and a natty across two seasons is pretty awesome too.

It's a public forum and anyone can participate. It appeared by your initial post you didn't want to partake in the revisionist thinking but after a second post it seems you do?
