The lowest defensive ranking for a national champion was Baylor in 2021, coming in at #22. That was also during Covid, with a shortened season and weird environments, so a slight asterisk there. The worst defensive rating for a champion was Villanova in 2018, at 94.0, which ranked 11th that year. National champions usually have a defensive rating in the high 80's/low 90's, which usually ranks in the top 10-15 for that season. Are these stats looking at ratings after the season is over, or where the teams stood before the tourney started? Quote

After the tourney. It’s skewed because beating 6 tourney teams is going to boost your ranking. I looked back using way back machine once and there were quite a few instances where teams weren’t so high entering the tourney Quote

I think generally people just use post. Going through the tourney will boost your ratings some but as you can see from IU’s good run here six games won’t vault you up the charts at this point. For reference Illinois blew us (a tourney team) out and their record offense increased by 0.1 points, which *might* be enough to move your offense or defense up a spot, generally. But for example if you’re ranked 29th in Oeff to start, after a 6 tourney run you’d probably make it into the top 25. But those teams that are like 2nd in Deff and 40th in Oeff generally don’t win titles. There are a few notable exceptions like Ollies UConn team. Also, someone looked at pre Kenpom numbers (you can get them if you have a subscription) and something like 75% of past champions have entered the tournament ranked 6th or higher. Which makes sense because while we use top 25 on O/Deff as a rule of thumb, the majority finish top 10 in both. So if you want to win the tournament you generally 1) have to be really good, and 2) be fairly balanced on both offense and defense. (I will try and remember to take a screen cap of the Kenpom top 30 or so this year after conference tournaments and we can see how much the winner moves. ) Quote

If you play a bunch of close games you won’t go as high as if you just rip through the tourney. Baylor from a few years back is a good candidate. They probably improved their defense quite a bit over that run. In general I’m guessing a team probably improves each ranking by a spot in the ranking for each game they win on average, with it being easier to improve poor rankings. If I have time today I will try and go back and look at a few teams that likely improved their ranking the most and see how much they moved. Quote
