Yogi Speaks Out

Recommended Posts

Let's have Bob Knight tell the kids what it means to play for Indiana and how you should handle yourself. He can verbally abuse them and teach them how to throw chairs during games. Then they'll understand what it means to play here.

Bob Knight "knows what it means to play for the Cream and Crimson" because he won. He was a damn good coach who brought basketball, not moral, victories to this school. He was never that great of a person. Crean is the opposite. I wish I knew which I preferred.

Since he had the fake I'd incident he has not had any more problems so what else does he have to do?
Same with Hanner. Since his incident he hasn't had any problems.
Time to let it go

not so fast. Whether you, Yogi or anyone for that matter likes it, he is the leader of this team and while he hasn't gotten into anymore trouble, so many of his teammates have and I put that on him as much as I do Crean. He is the man and people want to say the players like Crean qbut don't respect him, well I would say the same for Yogi. If his teammates respected him they wouldn't pull this crap. He needs to earn/demand their respect and get their crap together so yogis last year or two aren't a waste.

If he can't get his teammates to play with/for him than he will be the next Bracey Wright instead of Isiah Thomas

Knight was sometimes a "do as I say--not as I do Coach"--but I can tell you from personal knowledge he was a strict disciplinarian who ran a tight ship.  There were similar incidents to what we are going through now--these are college kids we are talking about---but there was also swift, memorable, and usually painful punishment.  Sometimes it was humiliating or degrading by today's standards but you did not want to repeat the behavior. The players feared but respected him and the upperclassmen helped him police the team.

I see your last point as key. Crean can set the rules and do his best to enforce them. But, despite what you or I want to admit, he cannot be everywhere all the time. These kids tend to hang out with teammates. It’s the upperclassmen that should be doing the "heavy lifting". They need to lead BY EXAMPLE. However, once you’ve crossed the line yourself and gotten nailed for it, it’s difficult to be seen as a leader again. As with most things worth having, they require work, and have to be earned.

The situation is aggravated by the nature and culture of college basketball these days. When I was in school, freshmen were barely allowed to play varsity ball (that started in 1972). And rare was the case where a college basketball player didn’t stay for at least 4 years. In order to go to the NBA, you had to file and prove financial hardship to be granted a waiver to enter the NBA draft. Today, there are many more one-and-dones or two-and-out players than ever. That creates a situation of attrition on many teams, where the "upperclassmen" are sophomores. In these cases, there is NO leading by example because there is no internal leadership to be had - the de facto leaders are still learning, themselves.

Peer pressure is a powerful force, and without the maturity and experience, it will be difficult to overcome the temptation to "go along to get along". Kids will be kids, and all that, but when you put on the candy stripes, you darn well better be wiling and able to live up to the expectations of the Hoosier Nation, namely, to win and to do it the right way. And to not bring embarrassment on the university.
