Tom Crean ...where is he?

Recommended Posts

I think there is a point where joking can be funny and on point, but also when it can be too far and people have trouble telling the difference. Going too far doesn't just hurt Crean (heck, he probably just rolls around in his money pool) it hurts recruiting. If your kid is a 5 star basketball player with top schools after him, do you want to go to the school where their own fans obviously dislike the coach and think he's a joke? Or to a school with a respected coach with a lot of fan loyalty?

I promise you...the recruits see everything you and I do, and recognize that coach is a unique individual...and I personally believe that they will or will not choose IU based on whether or not it's a good fit, and has very little to do with IU fans calling out Crean for his Twitter tendencies...

And it's been talked about dozens of times about how fanbase is part of a "good fit". The more hostile a fanbase seems to their coach, the less likely that coach is going to be there when you finish playing. If you think things like booing Crean during games doesn't affect what recruits think then you've never dealt with teenagers and their families.

I think recruits think what should b obvious to everybody and that is if crean wins he will b there but if not he wont. The recruits should feel like they r the answer to that. Gene least actually had a few good players and everybody laughed at that guy lol

Any possibility that what you think recruits think is biased by what you think?

Knight coached before the age of the internet...well, at least before the internet that we have now...

But everybody that I know talked about his temper, his tantrums, his ire, his love for the game like no other, and either accepted him or they didn't...

The internet does change how fast we gather information, but we are who we are...and sooner or later...your reputation is all you have to establish your standing with others.

Point is, the Internet allows for small ideas to deliver loud messages. Recruits look at forums like these just as players and coaches do. Perception is everything and you never know how someone will interpret the simplest of jokes.

Well...then we are in big trouble..anybody can pretend to be anybody on the internet, and there can be a huge contingency of UK fans trying to distract recruits pretending to be IU fans and if that's what they are basing their opinion on...

That probably is a very unlikely scenario. It's situations like we have here, where an established, clearly pro-Indiana member base is ripping Crean the same way a UK or Purdue fan base would rip him, that may actually concern a recruit. From their perspective, "Wow, IU fans don't even like Crean. Why would I want to waste my time playing for him?"

Ok. We are in disagreement...and that's cool...at the end of the day, I'm a coach Crean fan and he still has my support...there is nothing said on the internet that will change that, but I do get a little chuckle out of some of these comments...that's all.

Prayers as well.......and I will weigh in on the posts and say it is OK to disagree with Crean on coaching specifics--like x's and o's--substitutions--recruiting---inconsistent winning---transfers---etc.---but it goes too far when people start launching personal attacks or lament EVERY SINGLE THING the man does or says!  First of all--it is nonsense and not factual.  Second of all, it has to hurt us in the eyes of recruits that view the message boards or listen to other coaches repeat what our fans say. Third of all---it makes us sound like UK or PU fans---which we should never---ever---want to do!. If we want to be viewed as a great basketball program again--then we should start acting like one.  It's OK to have a little fun--but also show some class! And--be true to your school!

And to people taking offense to joking Crean posts. I used to rip on Bunbleknuts Bobby Knight for his admiringly huge fluffy uneven eye brows and his orgasmic faces when something unexpected happened. Sorry, I was raised by comedians. I never have once said, "Crean is a horrible coach" because honestly I don't think he is.
