Canada Trip Takeaways

Recommended Posts

Rob Johnson is for real.

The team seems to like each other; CTC seems to like the team.

We will get scored on inside on a regular basis.

Hanner better be with us, and better be good.

Devin and Troy have absolutely improved.

Stan now shoots right handed!

I haven't seen much reporting on as to why he switched hands. He seems to be doing well. Just unheard of at this level. If we get Kasongo I think we will be better defensively.

Probably because his left handed jumper had a nasty hitch in it.  Better to start from scratch on the other side.

Takeaways:

Troy is going to be a beast.

JB2 is a bad man.  shooting a very high percentage.  going to be great!

Rojo is impressive as well.  streakier shooting but going to be a competitor!

Stan had an impressive week.  Why isn't he getting MORE MINUTES?  His stats were efficient and impressive.

Priller can shoot, but has a long ways to go otherwise.

Davis is improved.  Need to see more.

Hoetzel has mad confidence.  needs to let the game come to him a bit more.

Yogi- no worries here-  going to be great again

Need to cutback on careless play.

Need to rebound better.

Z3 was impressive.  not going to be a superstar but we will win some games because of him.  Great BB IQ!

*  We have shooters and scorers this year.  Thank God because we lacked both last year.

*  JBJ is so natural and smooth.  I think he will be ready to go day one in the regular season.  He strikes me as the kind of guy who you'll look at the box score at the end of the game and say, "I knew he was playing well, but I didn't realize he had 25."

*  Troy might be ready to make a big leap.  We'll know when the real competition starts.  If he does, look out.

* Devin Davis is going to compete night in and night out.  He may not always put up pretty numbers but the wrecking ball is about to be unleashed.

* I was a skeptic of bringing in Nick Zeisloft.  If what he did in Canada holds then I was wrong again.  At this point he seems like a definite upgrade from Etherington and probably Hollowell too.

* We still need to get better with taking care of the ball, but I will point out two things on that front that give me a glimmer of hope.  1) We had our fewest number of turnovers against the best teams we played in Canada.  2) Our highest number of turnovers came in our last two games where I think fatigue was setting in.

* Tim Priller = crowd favorite.  He runs like an old man and shoots like a .... well I don't know how to describe that shot.  Like I said in last night's game thread, Priller is a sledgehammer, not a swan (bonus points to anyone who can name the color analyst who I stole that line from, double points if you can name the player or team he played for who the comment was made about).

* RoJo might not be All B1G as a freshman, but I think he'll be solid and contribute.

* Yogi is Yogi and that's a good thing.

* I'm ready for the season.

Didn't really get to keep up with the team because I worked through most of the games or had coaching.

This was a huge plus for this team. They really needed this, and it will go along way for the team! You can learn a lot from these games, but have to be careful with expectations. I'm really excited for this year, well.... just like every year haha, but also cautiously optimistic.

Hope the guys can turn it on and really gel together.

My takeaways, but i only watched one of the games:

Yogi is a very good lead guard, and he will be able to play more controlled this year because of more weapons, and I think his energy and stamina will be better because he has shooters and guards and wings that can run with him.

Nick Z can shoot the rock, and he is a smart player.  If I had to compare him to someone, I would say he plays like a Kyle Hornsby, Lance Stemler kind of player.  He is not afraid to shoot the ball unlike a certain guy on the team last year that only pump faked, but I digress.  He might actually put up more ppg than he did last year, and I can see him starting some games for us.

Troy will continue to start on the wing and will probably lead the team in rebounds, definitely offensive rebounds, and will most likely take better shots.  He has a chance to be an All Big Ten caliber player.

Devin will double his minutes from last year and will have a chance to lead us in rebounds.  I still don't think he can shoot, so the majority of his points will come from the free throw line, because he draws fouls very well.  I don't like him guarding B1G 4's and 5's.

Stan, well he's still got that unorthodox style of game, particularly when he's going to the hoop and jumping off his left and throwing up a runner.  Honestly though, he's pretty good at it.  Saw him do a Euro step runner yesterday and he banked it in.  He can score in bunches.  I know some have mentioned him switching to shooting with his right, but yesterday when he shot free throws he shot with his left.  I like him, but if it were me, I would have him come off the bench, but I still see him starting some games.  Like the rest of the guards on the team his defense must improve.

Blackmon and Johnson will both see a lot of minutes and can definitely play.  They are the best freshman guards that IU has had since Eric Gordon and Jordan Crawford in 2007.

Hoetzel has a ways to go, he's not bad and you can tell he has potential but at this point I don't see him getting heavy minutes.

Same thing goes for Priller, although i saw him shoot and make 2 three pointers last night.  He can shoot the rock, but he can't rebound or guard anyone.  He's a situational player.

I think our biggest worry is defense. If we add Kasongo we can instantly improve in that department. We won't have a conventional 5 like in years past, but we will have some big Forwards who can get the job done. In my opinion, Kasongo is the difference between middle of the pack and top 5 in the B1G

Is Kasongo known as a good defender? Freshmen bigs usually aren't.

I'm talking more in the sense that Hanner and DD will be our only options on defense. When one isn't in the game or someone gets in foul trouble, we would be in deep doo doo without a kid like Kasongo coming in. He's a bandaid for next season, not a permanent fix. But having a 6'9" guy coming off the bench come Big Ten play helps more than it hurts that's for sure

I don't think u can take much of anything during the trip.

However, I think this was a great chance to feel each other out to build better cohesion and flow within a competitive atmosphere.

I think Devin Davis is going to be the X factor this year, especially if we dont add Kasongo. If he can play big(maybe bring some AJ Moye type impact in the sense of playing bigger than he actually is) it would help us immensely.

Not sure what's going on with you guys' pictures recently. I've never ran into that problem on here.
