Perea not with Team due to VISA issues

Recommended Posts

Not sure if this has been mentioned, I haven't read eery post in this thread. What if Hanner's DWI kept him out of Canada? Soounds silly, but a friend was denied entry driving into Canada because of a shoplifting conviction when he was 18. This denial happened 20 years later while on a business trip.

A Colombian with a recent DWI in the US might be given extra scrutiny. They gave me the third degree crossing the boarder north of Burlington, Vermont.

I think there is a very distinct possibility this is punishment related from CTC. Potentially the staff is telling white lies to keep the heat off of HIM directly. It adds up in multiple ways. Just some food for thought!

No specific inside info here, but I think it adds up.

Also, along similar lines I've always thought Crean and staff conveniently used Jurkins injuries to explain his lack of playing time. I think that keeps the heat off a guy who isn't ready to play at this level. Keep an eye out for this same tactic with April. I trust the injury news for now, but my eyes and ears are perked and I'll watch this development closely!

Are you being serious Wayne? If so, you need to relax a little with the negative nancy stuff... Did you not listen to the press conference where he said it just came up last week?? I mean come on you're trying to say the coaching staff lied about injuries that hampered a player throughout his whole career. Shin splints are not easily treatable and can definitely affect a D1 athlete from performing.

Crean's post game interview on ITH is really good.
related, Crean says that Hanner's Visa issues were brought to their attention last week. In further talk about the issue, he seemed really confident that HMP would be joining the Hoosiers for the rest of the games IMO. if not the game on Sunday, I would assume that HMP will be back for the big one against Carleton on Monday.

Definitely, you know Crean called his high school coach to sit him out his senior year so just in case he couldn't play in the B1G he would have an excuse.

Call it what you will. I think it's smart to hold some information secret. You never show all your cards. I am not stating anything as FACT, just a theory based on some evidence and some privileged info. I never call anyone out, ever!!!!!! I don't see this as a "negative" nancy thing. I am not being negative. I think, as great as a guy as Jurkin is, he is better fit for where he is. Let's see how much he plays there. I am absolutely willing to bet he logs many more minutes at his new destination. I am NOT saying he didn't have injuries that hampered his development as I believe he did. Anyway, just watch and see how many minutes he logs going forward.

As far as the Visa thing. It very well could be the real story. I think there may be an alternate story. I don't believe everything I'm told by the news, the government, and Tom Crean. The general public doesn't have to know everything! I AM NOT being negative on this. Everyone is ripping the staff for not having this VISA situation worked out, and I am saying "maybe" it comes off as an odd miscalculation because there is more to the story.

Yes I am negative about recruiting as I deserve to be, but I am 100% stoked about the guys putting on Cream and Crimson day in and day out.

Yes I agree. I believe it gets "worked out" before the trip is over and he plays. So working with facts, they find out about Visa problems last week. They can't fix it ahead of time but by chance or miracle the Visa gets worked out mid trip and he plays. What are the odds? Possible? Yes, Probable? Maybe.

Anyway, I don't take all news I get at face value. I will leave it at that. I was just proposing another possible explanation to explain that our staff may not be clueless as some were suggesting. Critical thinking skills. Plus, some small inside info to get the wheels turning.

Not doubting his injury HISTORY. If he plays regularly at his next stop we will see just how injured he is/was. I think his injuries derailed his progression completely, but I think they became an easy scapegoat to save face for a project player who never quite developed to his hopeful potential.

I am not ripping Jurkin here, I am saying if he had Vonleh skills he would have PLAYED last year and still be a Hoosier.

Hope you get what I am saying.

If what Crean said is true, and I have no reason to believe it isn't, it makes perfect sense if they found out in the last week or 2. Working government things out takes a while and Indiana basketball players don't get priority over mere mortals like us.

I do have reason to believe it's not, but either way, you are right and government issues take a while to figure out.

That being said if he is magically cleared in a day or two I'll be more suspicious.

BUT... I want the boy playing, so I hope it "works out"!

If he is able to travel Monday, that would put the VISA issue at roughly 2 weeks which wouldn't be out of the ordinary if they expedited the process. Now if you have inside info stating there are other reasons then scratch what I said haha.

I'd love to say I'm surprised by this but I'm not.

Couldn't agree more

I've just become so terribly depressed about our basketball program that just about anything that can go wrong is going to go wrong as far as I am concerned. It all started when Yogi and Stan got busted using fake ID's. I knew right then and there we have no hope. The 20% turnover rate last year was a huge factor but the excise police incident was the final straw

Perea is our only big and needs every bit of development he can get. That's hard enough when a coach plays such a huge rotation and rarely allows his best players to average over 30 minutes per game in any given season (I think Yogi/Will played +30 MPG this past year and Hulls did a couple times but freaking three top ten picks don't WTF!?!?!?!?!?) but completely missing out on a foreign tour is a huuuuge blow to a raw player's development. These things are only allowed every 4 years for a reason

Turned it over on about 18% of our possessions in game one. What a surprise

The outrage over this is nauseating. I, too, don't want to know how some of you react to things that actually matter.

Hanner not playing isn't going to change a single thing about this season. Sure, it's unfortunate. But sometimes there's nothing you can do, and that includes anyone--believe it or not--even the head coach at Indiana. I don't think he can alter Canadian law.

Agree. My Grandfather had a saying that has stuck with our entire family over the years. Simply "don't panic, adjust". I think of it everyday in my life, and feel it applies here. Like you said, it's unfortunate, but not the end of the world, and it's most likely something the staff could do nothing about.

Sometimes I wonder how some folks in this forum handle adversities in real life. Things like this happen. I'm sure our coaches did their due diligence, but we're talking about dealing with a government, and a Canadian government at that! Bureaucracy is slow and often times causes more problems. I fully believe this was an issue that was out of their control. Here's to hoping it's solved, and Hanner gets up their soon. Sent from my place of advanced, analytical thinking: the toilet.
