(2016) SG Rawle Alkins to Arizona

Recommended Posts

If CTC should want another year, he will need to land Alkins, Maker or someone very close to their rank (or there is anyone still available of this caliber) plus a Sweet 16 minimum to keep his job.

Is maker no longer an option with TB and DD? Would CTC be able to incorporate three bigs that would demand starter minutes?

Isn't Alkins a Lance Stephensonesque guard? How wound that gel with the guards anticipated to stay for next year?

I don't care if we get Thon, Rawle and/or the second coming of Larry Bird, (hell, even if we got every one of Kentucky's current freshmen, plus whomever they have coming next year), we'd still have Tom Crean leading the charges. People can dream all they want of 7 ft. agile centers, lightening quick guards with hair trigger releases and dead eye marksmanship, or forwards who can rain threes yet still bang with the best of them under the bucket; it's fun. But after awaking from these nearly erotic level dreams, and after rubbing the sleep out of our eyes, we're forced to remember that Tom Crean is the person in charge of developing that talent; and that sobering truth is enough to counter any positive gains in recruiting. He's Lou Henson with better hair.

It's dumb to think talent alone can't win you a championship.

Not even Kentucky's championship team had that level of talent though.  They didn't win on talent alone, Cal is a pretty good coach in his own right and that team was getting better as the year went on.

At some point you usually need good coaching.

EDIT:  Crean isn't even in the same universe as being a good enough recruiter to win on talent alone.

@NextCats: FINAL: Word of God Academy (N.C.) 121, Victory Prep (Texas) 101. Rawle Alkins finishes with 51 points (33 in the second half).

With Crean watching.

51 points, I want to see his whole stat sheet. I bet CTC was slobbering all over Alkin's performance.

Never said anything about Crean, why does he have to be brought into every comment?

Because when one talks about recruiting or possible "gets", one invariably has to remember who's recruiting them or coaching them, (or not coaching them, as the case may be). Crean's name is brought up because no matter how far the pendulum swings towards talent on one's roster, Crean is the counterbalance that brings it back the other way.
