Nah, it's good to see your honest opinions. We see so much of your A+ recruiting info, we rarely get to see what you think of the program!

He's had decent success. VERY decent. But that's about it. All those first places finishes in conference while at NM but no tournament success. Keep in mind, Second Round now means round of 64, so he won 1 game in 2012 and 0 games in 2013.

Wait... he took 2 NBA draft picks to the sweet 16 and brought in a top recruiting class? Who does this guy think he is, Tom Crean?!

And as CampCrean said above, he helped cover up one of his players who sexually assaulted someone. Pass.

I don't understand the constant criticism of former Knight players who are coaching. Alford, Crews, Woodson, etc. Even when they are doing well, people seem to want to tear them down. When they fail, people love to point out their transgressions. Why not applaud them when they do succeed? They are Hoosiers and we should be proud when they have success elsewhere.

I'm all for that. I'm just tired of people wanting to bring them back. This thread happens weekly. But Alford is indeed a scum bag and I wouldn't even want him coaching Purdue. I never saw anyone tear Woodson down. In fact, most agree he got jobbed with that garbage Knick roster last year. I think this board has a stiffy for Crews. So other than Alford, I don't know what you're basing the "tearing down" comment on. Alford was a great player, doesn't make him a good man.

I'm not saying I have a specific opinion on this either way, I was just noting they tied Alford's name with IU in a BR article

Sent from my iPhone using BtownBanners

Oh no offense meant. I got what you were aiming for, I think people have just been worn down by the constant comments about former Knight players coming to coach here

I don't think Alford is a bad coach because of Bob Knight. I don't think he's a bad coach at all, actually. But he hasn't proven to be a particularly good one and he's not going to leave UCLA unless he gets fired so there's really no reason to even discuss whether or not he should be the next coach at IU.

Let's see what he does with this year's Bruins. He is bringing in a great class but he lost two NBA draft picks and a bunch of seniors. Sounds a lot like IU last season.

Ben Howland left UCLA's team in a mess. When Alford was hired, he managed to keep UCLA's roster intact ( with the exception of Shabazz Mohammed who entered the NBA draft ) when most of the players wanted to leave. Then in Alford's first season as the Bruins' coach, he led them to win the Pac-12 tournament and two NCAA tournament games. Now he has recruited the #3 ranked class in 2014, which includes three 5-star front court players. Pretty shabby, huh? Yeah, the guy's got nothin'.

Howland's last team won the Pac 12.

I remember praising Crews when he became interim coach at Saint Louis and getting "Yeah, Crews. LOL. What has he ever done?" type responses. Now that he is HC there and made a nice run in the tournament, people may have changed their minds about him. When Woodson was being discussed as a replacement for Crean a few months ago, people were saying he's not a good coach, although he did have success with the Hawks. Now Alford is doing well at UCLA. I think that's great. ( Although I do hope we beat him out for some top recruits. ) Alford has a very solid contract with UCLA. I don't see him ever coaching at IU.

For the record, I don't want Alford, Crews, or Woodson to be our next HC. We need to go in a different direction now. At the same time, I'm not going to engage in bashing our former players who are coaching elsewhere. Unless we happen to be playing them; in that case, it's open season.

My problem is people always talk about "accepting mediocrity", but then fawn over coaches who, while they have had success, would in no way be in demand if they didn't have ties to Knight. There isn't some magic dust that makes former IU players amazing coaches.

man...if Alford doesn't become one of the greatest coaches of all time...I don't know how they are made these days...

played High School ball under one of Indiana's finest, played college ball under one of the elite of all of college ball...

has been shooting nerf balls at hoops as soon as or before he could crawl...

if there was one person that I would have bet the farm on being a legendary coach, it would have been Alford....

but, sadly...it just hasn't come to fruition...yet.

I pull for Alford to be successful at UCLA. I do to want him at IU. Go get Stevens or keep Crean are the options. If Crean fails this year we will see if Stevens wants to come back to college.

As for "fawning over" former IU players who have success coaching, I don't recall doing that. I will congratulate them, however. What IU fan wouldn't? They are Hoosiers and reflect well on our program.

Its not really you. It's because of years of bizarre ramblings from people on various IU boards. And I don't particularly like Alford because of the pierce situation and how he treated a lot of people at Iowa.
