OT: Buzz Williams to VT

[quote name="IU Hoosier41" post="51906" timestamp="1395544342"]I take this as a HUGE sign that Marquette is going to be on the struggle bus. Don't know why you'd want to take over a struggling program in the NEW ACC.

I agree with you. Probably harder to get recruits now that they took a huge step back in moving to the little east. That's like Oliver Purnell leaving Clemson for DePaul when he had a decent program at Clemson but left for a bad bad program.

Or Frank Martin from Kansas State to South Carolina.

I don't really see this being a great move for Buzz. I think Va. Tech would be a tough place to recruit to. As for Luke, I have a son that is a college freshman, playing basketball at a NAIA school. I was really worried about him being home sick when he started school. Luckily, he was fine, but if he had wanted to come closer to home I would have moved him closer. They are kids, and making big decisions in their young life. I don't blame Luke at all. This is an unfortunate situation, for him, though.

If I had a kid who wanted to come home after a semester I'd tell him to finish the year he committed to then decide. Turns out that might have been the better decision for him anyhow.  It was an unfortunate situation for Indiana too. The kid needs to grow up and take responsibility for his actions. Letting him come running home to mommy after one semester isn't teaching that at all.

Howland is a really interesting candidate. If he goes back to his roots as a coach and runs the program (and recruits the kinds of kids) the way he did at Pitt and his first few years at UCLA he could be a home run hire for them. On the flip side if he continues down the same path he was on the last few years at UCLA (recruiting to the # of stars vs fit for his team/scheme) then I could see him having a mediocre tenure there.

Purnell left for 2 million reasons. I think Buzz left because of what's left of the conference. Martin left Kansas State because he didn't get along with the AD.

I see what you are saying, and make him finish the season, I agree. But, a kid finishing a whole school year, unhappy, may lead to a lot bigger problems then just being homesick. A lot of kids are making their first, big decision of their lives. I would have made my son finish the season, if basketball had started. And, they should know by the time basketball starts, if they are homesick or not.

I think Buzz left bc of things goig on behind the scenes. He didn't have a good relationship with the interim AD. Marquette still needs to hire someone for that position. Marquette also doesn't currently have a provost and has a Interim president. Which they are in the works of hiring. So there is a lot if uncertainty at te positions above him and he has a rocky relationship with those currently there. Add in a sexual assault case against some basketball players (not sure if any are on the current squad or not). The alumni not ring happy with the issues that seem to come up from the players under Buzz.

He probably felt the writing was on the wall and it was time for a change before new faces came in and cleaned house anyway.

Howland would be an instant upgrade if he runs a tight ship, like at Pitt. I think he has learned his lesson and would hire him yesterday.

I like Howland as a coach. If he gets the Marquette job, I see him going back to the successful style he had at Pitt. He won't be under constant pressure to recruit the next Kobe or LeBron at Marquette the way he did at UCLA.

Nope, just the next Dwayne Wade.

I have two in college now and another heads off next year. I have worked with a lot of high school kids over the last 10 or so years in a different sport. Some have great parents but can struggle with things others do not. Have seen kids in a poor home do great and vice versa.

Your statement is, as you noted your opinion, but left me curious as to how old your kids are.
