non-conference schedule going forward

Recommended Posts

in 2014 the non-conference schedule consists of: vs IN St, @ Bowling Green, @ Missouri, and vs North Texas

I hope to god that after this year we are done playing teams like Missouri or road games at MAC schools

we would have been in a bowl game this past year if not for two out of conference games vs Missouri and Navy (teams with loaded offenses should especially be avoided considering our defensive ineptitude) so hopefully Glass doesn't persist in his efforts to make it wayyyy harder than it needs to be to make a bowl game

I got a bad feeling about Glass when he sold that home game to PSU so they could have an alumni reunion in DC. Seeing him throw that huge extension Crean's way shortly thereafter was another bad sign. The non-conference schedules are apparently only set in stone through this season so hopefully Glass starts giving me some reason to be happy with him in the form of easy out of conference opponents in 2015

it doesn't matter who you beat in the non-conference, the SEC has proven that time and time again

it is important that we play in bowl games and the way to ensure we do that every year is to optimize the out of conference schedule via home games vs MAC schools, a home game vs a FCS opponent every single year, and then maybe a C-USA/Sun Belt type of home game to round out the slate

it was absolutely unacceptable for IU football to be playing Mizzou and Navy in the same season. It was like we were trying to make Wilson's job way harder than it already is

If we want to be the best, we have to beat the best. CKW has brought in IU's best classes ever, back-to-back, without going to a bowl game. What he has shown is progression on the field. And where there has be regression, he is fixing it (ie Mallory). These are steps in the right direction. The tough NC competition is a barometer of how the season will go IMO. Nothing wrong is testing these guys. Why place a veil over their eyes and pump them full of false hope, by beating NAIA teams? Then to get smacked up in a bowl game by par or above par competition? I'd rather them play against quality competition, all year round. Just my $0.02.[/quote]

I agree with this. Regarding the Mizzou/Navy matchups, we were in that Mizzou game for the better part of 2 quarters and didn't truly get hammered if I remember correctly. I also think we should've beaten Navy. Just couldn't get a stop when we needed it. Mizzou was far less winnable than Navy, but win 1 out of those 2 and you're looking at a different type of season.

As in. No more IN St. on the schedule. Lets at least bring in MAC level teams.

This.  I'm okay with having a weak team or two in the non-con, but I want us to have better teams in there too as a barometer for where we are.  Plus the better competition will prepare the teams better for the conference season, you don't learn anything by beating up on some scrub.  Baptism by fire.

Glass seriously can't win. BBall schedule is too easy, football schedule too hard. If we sold out memorial stadium, he wouldn't have had to sell that home game a few years back. I'm a season ticket holder, and had no problem with that as long as we didn't make it a regular thing, and he said he doubted he would do it again, so...

I will say that IMO, the bball schedule is too easy (although that appears to be getting better) and fball is just right. I would like to see 7 home games though.

We're lucky to have him (although I can already hear the hoops only fans screaming when we announce the other two facilities projects...I mean who cares about wrestling and volleyball, amirite? And that rehab building should be at assembly hall! We should be spending $150 mil on Brad Stevens!)

Next year our schedule is:

Aug 30 vs Indiana State

Sept 6 BYE

Sept 13 @ Bowling Green

Sept 20 @ Missouri

Sept 27 vs Maryland

Oct 4 vs North Texas

Oct 11 @ Iowa

Oct 18 vs Michigan State

Oct 25 BYE

Nov 1 @ Michigan

Nov 8 vs Penn State

Nov 15 @ Rutgers

Nov 22 @ Ohio State

Nov 29 vs Purdue

Obviously theres nothing to do about the conference portion of that, so looking at just non conference, we have:

Aug 30 vs Indiana State

Sept 6 BYE

Sept 13 @ Bowling Green

Sept 20 @ Missouri

Sept 27 vs Maryland

Oct 4 @ North Texas

I think we should definitely schedule at least three games that will be easy wins. IMO we need those games to make getting to a bowl game easier. Look at the state of the program right now. We need wins so we can get to bowls so we can recruit better talent. Then we can be more picky about getting a tough schedule. Other criteria should be recruiting grounds: we see coach Wilson has a high volume of recruits in his last two classes from Georgia, so games in the south east would be ideal. We should also have one of these games in the Midwest because it is easier to lock down talent close to home. Bowling Green kills two birds with one stone here in easy win and on a recruiting ground in Ohio. North Texas is similar in this aspect and getting into Texas is always a positive.

So, lets assume we keep North Texas and Bowling Green (or teams similar) and we are left with:

Missouri, Indiana State.

In these slots I would like either an evenly matched team or another easy win and one that we are clearly the underdog in (preferably this one on the road in a loud, hostile environment- our players need the experience)

A team to beat up on/be evenly matched with- Indiana State is nice, keeping it in state has some value. But it would be nice to impress recruits on the road. Think somewhere similar to Bowling Green... maybe Iowa State or a directional Michigan school. Maybe a school like Georgia Tech for a challenge

A team to challenge us to get better (IE beat up on us): ideally Notre Dame, but they obviously won't schedule us with their schedules being made years in advance and a plethora of other reasons. A marquee school here is a must so Indiana gets their name in the press, preferably one with an interesting story line but thats not necessary. Continue thinking based on recruiting hotspots, maybe a school like Stanford? UTexas or UGA so recruits get a second chance to see us and IU develops somewhat of a presence in the area.

I also believe it is crucial that we schedule as many easy wins at home as possible. This will allow us have a better record and thus more buzz around the team later in the season. Hopefully this raises the morale/support from the fan base

So, a schedule I would make up would look something like:

Aug 30 vs Eastern Michigan (easy win)

Sept 6 BYE

Sept 13 @ Bowling Green (easy win/recruiting ground)

Sept 20 @ UGA ("Get better game"/recruiting ground)

***

Oct 4 @ North Texas (easy win/recruiting ground) Maybe some years Texas Tech or a somewhat evenly matched school in a recruiting area like Georgia Tech

Oct 11 @ Iowa

Oct 18 vs Michigan State

Oct 25 BYE

Nov 1 @ Michigan

Nov 8 vs Penn State

Nov 15 @ Rutgers

Nov 22 @ Ohio State

Nov 29 vs Purdue

You may notice the recurring theme... recruiting. The lifeblood of collegiate athletics. CKW has done a great job recruiting with what has been available to him and the more wins... the easier (and better) recruiting becomes.

My ideal schedule is really not too (maybe any) different from the current one. I really believe Glass is doing a great job scheduling and Wilson is putting a good product on the field.

Apologies if this rambling hurt anybody's head :haha:

What if we just want to be 6-6?

In all seriousness I'd go for the middle ground. Give me 1 equivalent opponent - so a lower BCS team (maybe Mississippi State or Utah or someone like that) or a good mid major and then fill the rest in with D1 schools who we should beat from the MAC or CUSA or whatever. We'll still have a chance to see how good the team is in a game that we can win (and I would imagine they thought Mizzou would fit that category when they made the schedule), but we don't take on a schedule that sets the team up to fail.

I could live with that for a few years.

2015

2016

2017

Wake is a good matchup. Lower level ACC team. Glass ideally wants a major conference team, a MAC team, and then probably some cupcake. He has said he'd like to add UofL or UK, so maybe in 2017? Remember, 9 game conference scedules start in 2016, so only 3 games. Will alternate between 4 and 5 conference home games each year.
