Devil's Advocate - Tom Crean

Recommended Posts

If the players have been the issue, they now have a perfect opportunity to prove everyone wrong. If they have any pride, I expect them to come out and play determined and with a lot of energy. If not, Crean has lost the team. The players aren't responsible for the questionable lineups and momentum killing mass substitutions.

Looking forward to it. It's always less fun to look at things from his point of view. We can say all we want about his coaching and methods, but he knows this team and players better than anyone else on this planet. He isn't trying to lose games on purpose....

I agree 100%, I just also think players don't hide frustration well. It never appears to me like they are upset with him and you can normally tell that

Hey, If it's the players and not coaches fault, there are plenty of other players on the bench. If a starter or rotation guy isn't executing the game plan, I know there are plenty of bench players that will do their best given the chance. I realize most of the guys on the bench aren't as talented or athletic, but once the talented athletic players posterior gets tired from sitting on the bench it will translate to their brain and the game plan execution will work itself out. What's the worst that can happen, we lose a couple games, get boo'd during the game? Oh, that's right, we are seeing plenty of that already. Wake up Tom Crean and work this thing out for the betterment of the team. The fans wil get behind you just as quick as they have turned on you.

I went to a Butler game last night and they're down on talent this year, but played hard and the crowd was behind them. They lost another close game, but the only booing was directed at the referees. Great atmosphere there and I came away thinking that they are improving and they are a player or two away from being a tournament team again.

Their fans are also probably more realistic in their expectations. Indiana fans think we should be in the Final Four every year... Those old timers got spoiled before College Basketball started to change.

old timers common. I don't think any would have a problem with a lot of teams records over the past ten years. If u want to suck as bad as this team has and have fan support then don't cramp the bed the rear prior when u had talent.

Sent from my SCH-I535 using BtownBanners mobile app

Well Bobby never had IU in the Final Four every year either. But his teams ran in rather predictable cycles of building towards a championship every 5-6 years until Calbert graduated, after that it kind of fell apart.

Tom's problems are the following, not in any particular order:

 • He isn't RMK.
 • His first championship caliber team lost in the Sweet 16. Upsets happen but I'm just speaking from the perspective of the collective fanbase in that the only times RMK had a great team and did not win it, there was at least one key injury. Scott May in 1975, Alan Henderson in 1993. The 1992 team got hosed by Ted Valentine but I digress.
 • The Movement turned into a bowl movement.

Honestly as long as this IU team won 20 games and made the NCAA tournament, I don't think you would see as much criticism. But here we are with a team that is perhaps not even a sure NIT bet at this point. I think that is a shock to the senses and while it is true not every season can be a great one, to drop back down to this kind of a level after being "back" well people aren't going to handle that very well.
