NOLA Hoosier

Anyone else worried?

Recommended Posts

I'm asking this because all of us here being the Hoosier fans we are find ourselves in a tough spot this year. I'm worried for a few reasons.

1. We may or may not make the tournament. I know this has been covered on several threads, but the issue of not making the tournament is compounded by:

2. The fact that we are in danger of losing the greatest record in the history of college basketball not once, but twice. People are on here all the time lately talking about how we're not that important anymore as far as the rest of the country goes, and losing an undefeated record would further push IU into national blase.

3. Not speaking for myself personally, but it's a fact that a number of fans are growing increasingly frustrated with CTC, and if things keep going par for the course, it will only get worse. The booing at the game (again, covered in another thread), the countless posts of people yelling for his head, the strange substitutions...lots of folks are getting impatient, especially because:

4. Last year we should have had it. All the stars were aligned, all the proper voodoo rituals performed, everything was in the right place. And lo and behold, here we are.

Like it or not, we're in a real spot this year. We need to win some more games, bottom line. I'm just saying that I'm pretty damn worried about losing this undefeated record most of all. Thoughts?

1. Troubling and would not be good, but I'm holding out hope based on our upside and winning some big games so far.

2. I'm not worried about it at all. I see Wichita losing to Indiana State tonight based on terrible travel conditions and ISU is tough at home. Syracuse I see losing at Duke, if not before. If both teams win out, a conference tournament loss is very realistic.

3. Is annoying. Yes, it is frustrating sometimes to watch him coach and his decisions can be completely mind-boggling, but he isn't going anywhere and we can't get anyone better right now anyways. (I'm not calling you bringing it up annoying, just the whole situation.)

4. I had so much hope for last year. All the hype. All the talent. I felt like those guys were family. All of the players were likable. I was fortunate enough to go to Dayton for the tournament games and it made me even more excited for a tournament run, but we weren't prepared for Syracuse. Not a fun situation, but what can we do?

I don't think we are a tournament team right now. I think we still have some work to do, can't keep crapping the bed, and blowing games we more than likely should win, NW, or have games where we   get a big lead then choke it away, Nebraska. I think this would be another pretty big knock on Crean with us missing the tournament, this would leave us with two years of really good basketball. And really only one season where we overachieved, the 2011-2012 season, and last year we met regular season expectations, but underachieved a bit in the postseason obviously.

I disagree about all the stars aligning last season. I think a lot of people overrated how good we were last season, we had some really good offensive players, who really flowed well together. I don't understand the idea that some fans have when they say we had the most talented team in the country last season, and some say we had way more talent.

Yeah as Hovadipo mentioned, the last undefeated season will be safe. The way Wichita St's season is going reminds me of St. Joe's 10 years ago. They may make the tournament undefeated but will likely get beat by a 4/5 seed in the Sweet 16 or the 2/3 seed in the Elite 8. It's a lot different being the favorite than being the team underneath the radar. Just ask Gonzaga.

Syracuse still has the 2nd half of the ACC season plus 3 games in 3 days in Greensboro. I can see the ACC refs giving them the official 'ACC welcome', especially at Cameron.

Relax.  our banner is coming. soon. it's coming.

There is nothing, absolutely not a thing, in Crean's track record as a coach to make anyone think he can hang a banner.  We can hope, but we cannot look at his history and be confident of it.  He's been a head coach for 15 years and his resume is eerily similar to Mike Davis, and we know Davis won't win a championship.

He might suddenly think it's a great idea to hang a Sweet 16 banner (no, that's not a suggestion, the rings were stupid enough), but his ability to actually win a title is very much in question.
Not worried about Syracuse going undefeated we will beat them in 2 and a half weeks. Coach boeheim has 4 final fours in 30+ years I think he is one the most overrated coaches of all time but I always get taken to the wood house for that opinion.
I'm not sure that I'd say he's overrated...BUUUT..I really hate that man, so overrated it is!

I wish I shared your optimism.

The thing is, while yes we have sucked most of this year, our coaching hasn't been great etc. I''d rather stay optimistic and have IU basketball as something to enjoy and be excited about rather than being mad about it and letting it make me grumpy.

I agree. I am critical of coach and this team, but there is no reason to be down all the time. Plus, I've always been a glass half full guy! :)

I'm just trying to call a spade a spade.  There is nothing to suggest Crean is a championship caliber coach, aside from 1 run and even Mike Davis has one run on his resume.

He's a better spokesman, but the on court product Crean has put out for the vast majority of his career has been very Mike Davis like.

I'm not wired that way.  I see a light and the end of the tunnel, I move because it could be an on coming train.

This might be the first post you've ever made that I agree with. I too wish you shared at least a tiny bit of his optimism. You'd be so much more pleasant to be around that way.  If he doesn't have enough to go around I'd be more than happy to give you some of mine. I have plenty for everyone and I share freely. Life is too short to go around doing your absolute best to make everyone around you as miserable as yourself. It's also a horrible way to treat others.

Honestly, I am not that worried.  Bob Knight is a God around Bloomington.  There are 2 teams of his 3 who shouldn't have won a title.  We got hot at the right time.  That said, an argument should be made that we had 2 teams way better than 2 of his title teams that did not win it.  Last year it was painfully obvious going in Louisville was hot.  We really lost our mojo mid way through the season.  There is nothing certain in a 6 game single elimination tournament.  We have only won one title in the modern format.  If I am taking the glass half full approach I know only one team has more top 10 victories since Cody's first season here.  Crean's teams can beat anyone.  People will question Crean until he wins or is fired.  Nature of the beast.  Do I know for certain either way?  No, but if anyone says they do they are lying.  In a 6 game tournament, nothing is guaranteed.  I have seen some damn good teams like the Duke team on our way to the title game lose.  Some thought that was an all-time great team.  We beat them with Mike Davis.

Syracuse plays at Duke soon enough, that will be the end of that streak. And as crazy as every season in the B1G is, when it comes to the B1G tourney, in Indy, who says we can't make a run at it with the home court advantage.
