Illinois at IU Postgame Thread

Recommended Posts

Starting guard play was considerably better in this one. Noah was big on the boards and defensively. Always nice to see Austin and Howard come in and give us good minutes, Austin was really big in this one. Troy was good in the first half, and the hustle play was big late in this one. Good win

Yeah, it was a win. Defense was good for the most part, offense was a struggle. Didn't understand not playing Jeremy in the 2nd half, but it worked out in the end with a win. Illinois made it hard for Vonleh, but he didn't let that affect him. He went after every rebound and played tough defense. Yogi was more efficient on the offensive side of the ball, and Stan and Austin continue to give very good minutes when they are in. Also loved seeing Hollowell finally knock down a three.

I wasn't impressed with the offense, but there was improvement in some areas.

Just happy to get a win.  A double digit win against a B1G opponent.  Offensively, I think we are what we are at this point.  Getting to the rim is this team's game.  I really liked getting the ball in to the post to the guards at different points.  Would really like to see that continue.  That is a Crean wrinkle we haven't seen in prior years.

I love watching AE's progression. It's baby steps, but impressive. He's gaining confidence as a ball handler. Stan is an intangible- contributes in ways that aren't always noticeable. Noah is just, well, impressive. Nobody looked lost today- yes, some standing around, some bone headed plays, but there was purpose.

Solid game. Pretty ugly. Crowd had no energy, but the teams played with good energy. Etherington gets better every game. I still can't stand Jeff Howard being on the court, though. Hanner does the exact same thing as Howard, just a little more awkwardly. I'd call that Yogi's best game of the season by far. He was efficient scoring and had nice rebound and assist numbers. Noah was a beast on the boards, but he took like 5 shots. Pardon me, but THAT IS UNACCEPTABLE. And, for all the NBA fans reading this, next time you watch a Rockets game, watch James Harden and try to tell me that he and Stan don't play almost identically. Harden is a better outside shooter, and a little taller, but those guys going to the basket look nearly identical and they both can defend anyone (though Harden often chooses not to). Oh, and I love beating Illinois. Sent from my iPhone using BtownBanners

Jeff Howard played nearly twice as many minutes (14) than Jeremy Hollowell, Hanner Mosquera- Perea, and Devin Davis COMBINED (8).

I think Hollowell should play more, but I'm perfectly fine with Howard getting more minutes than Perea and Davis, as neither of three being anything offensively and Howard doesn't mess up as much.

Yeah, Howard is kind of like Austin was (and to an extent still is).  His value is that he doesn't hurt us as much as the alternatives which is why he gets minutes.

I wanna see more Jeremy as well he has looked good the last 2 games in the spare minutes he has gotten. I also want to see a lot more austin.

All_Hoosiers...this is NOT directed at you in any way, but since you raised the point:

Hoosier fanbase overreaction #1: Turnovers are killing us. Why can't we do something about all dem cursed turnovers!!?!!

Hoosier fanbase overreaction #2: Why is that walk-on Howard getting all dem minutes instead of talented kids like Perea, Davis, and the rejuvenated Hollowell!!?!!

A double digit loss and this entire board goes ape Sh&$ about this that and anything else, so I will take. 10 point win at home in the B10. There were some scary moments including the fact we were up 11 give up a 7-0 run and again no TO. But let's face it this team is still very young. Our best 6 players are underclass men. What I hope is we finally get it together and not blow someone out but play consistently better. Hit open shots, knock down free throws when we can build on a lead and just people away instead of let teams hang around or us just barely hanging in games. I am hoping that is not a pipe dream and I would prefer to focus game by game and get some confidence and build and build on that! Go IU!

Random thoughts:

--lol  I Loved the Howard Tip-in!  I yelled at the TV when he did that, "Howards got a replay!"  and sure enough!  That a boy!

--Yogi still get's a little out of control.  He needs to tame it down a little.

--We stil can't hit a consistent 3 nor will we anytime this year IMO.

--AE is a spark plug and I hope he doesn't leave the team early (as some have speculated).  I think he could be next year's 'Will-Sheehey-of-yesteryear'.

--I'd love Noah to stay next year, but his potential is too great for the next level...just can't see it happening.

--Stanford and Troy will be AWESOME next year.  Not good...but great!

No way he leaves. That was speculation from dramatic, sore losers looking for a scapegoat. I love what he has been bringing and what he will bring in the future.

RE: Howard getting minutes:

The announcers say stuff like he sets screens well (Can JH and HP not set screens?), plays good defense, etc. I thought his defense was average at best today to be honest. They made it a point to get Egwu the ball when Howard was guarding him.

Howard is, at best, the statistical equivalent to a replacement level player. Surely Jeremy and Hanner have exceeded that midway through their second years? Don't get me wrong, my sphincter crushes diamonds every time Jeremy puts the ball on the floor. Maybe my expectations are too high for them though.

RE: The turnovers:

Against several opponents this year, we have turned the ball over on a quarter of our possessions. That is obscene. Turnovers definitely kill us at that rate.

Edit:

I'd also like to add that Stan Robinson was excellent on both ends of the floor tonight. He still takes more jump shots than we may like but he is the best 2-guard on the team.

Austin Etherington - how good has he been? Definitely the kind of role player this team needs. We pegged him as a one dimensional shooter but he does so much more. I personally really enjoy his recent success.

I wouldn't even call Hanner a replacement level player.  He's improved, but not to the point where I feel comfortable with him on the court.  I'm more comfortable with Howard on the court than Hanner right now.  Jeremy has been better since he was benched, not that he could've got much worse, but he's still got work to do before I'm real comfortable with him out there.  You're absolutely right on Howard being replacement level, but his right now he hurts us less than the alternatives and that's not a good situation to be in.

As for turnovers, they absolute can and have killed us.  @UI is a perfect example, we didn't lose because it was a road game we lost because we turned it over every other time down the court.
