Shocked by some of the poor reactions. He's 6'8 can shoot and is a good enough athlete. Crean sees talent as it is now and what it can be in the future, not just current rankings like the majority of cbb followers. Have heard worries of shooting with this years team so the addition of a very good shooter should make us happy. If ppl are worried that this guy isn't good enough to compete at this level than I can assure you D-Robb isn't worried about Max getting in the way of pt. On the hand if D-Robb is effected by this then to me it means Max is good enough to be at this level. Strong believer that this is a solid pick up and also doesn't effect the decision Wednesday. Come on Hoosier Nation, Max is "verbally" a Hoosier so let's have our guys back!

When 2014 forward Max Hoetzel made the decision to transfer from Calabasas (Calif.) High School this past August, he wanted to get more exposure heading into his senior year of high school. So, he chose to attend Wilbraham and Monson (Mass.) Academy, where he could be a starter from day one.

Almost three months later, before he played a single game for the Titans, he added an offer from Indiana, and only five days after that, while on his official visit to Bloomington, he committed.

Sunday evening, the 6-foot-8 shooter made the decision to attend Indiana University, becoming the second member of the Hoosiers’ 2014 recruiting class, joining shooting guard Robert Johnson.

“Discussions with (Indiana coach Tom) Crean during his visits at Wilbraham were so productive that only severe red flags during the official could have steered him in another direction,” Hoetzel’s father, Holger, told Inside the Hall Sunday evening. “There were none. We all loved this school and this program.”

In the weeks after Hoetzel arrived in Massachusetts, more schools started showing interest than the schools that had previously offered him — including Utah, Davidson, Utah State and Boise State, among others. There was St. John’s, Pennsylvania and Rhode Island, who offered him. Connecticut, Florida, Harvard, Iowa State and Maryland showed interest.

“I always thought Max could be a high major college player,” Calabasas coach Jon Palarz said.

But when Indiana coaches Tom Crean and Kenny Johnson came to WMA one day in late September to watch recruiting target and teammate Goodluck Okonoboh, WMA coach Chris Sparks convinced them to watch Hoetzel, as well. They liked what they saw.

In the weeks that followed, Indiana’s coaching staff stayed in regular contact with Hoetzel and his family —  between text messages and phone calls — and on this past Tuesday evening, Crean and Johnson returned to Massachusetts once more.

This time, they offered Hoetzel a scholarship. Only two days later, Hoetzel decided to take an official visit to Bloomington that weekend. His parents, who are in the process of moving to Santa Barbara, chose to stop packing and fly to Indiana to meet their son. On Sunday, after consulting with his parents, Hoetzel made his college decision clear.

“We loved everything about it,” Holger Hoetzel said. “Especially coach Crean and all the staff that are part of the program.”

I am impressed with the video of him shooting.  He has good arc, and a quick release.  Dude likes his turn around on smaller players.  If you have him down on the block against smaller players he has excellent foot work that gets him into a good position to take his shot.  He isn't going to be all conference as a freshman, but if dude works, I think he could be a player towards the end of his career.  6'8" players don't come in with that type of refined shooting motion often.  I think he can have a Matt Roth type of career.  His senior year Roth was very valuable in spurts.  We don't need 15 McDonalds All Americans.  That is not realistic.

Hoetzel, a 6-foot-7 player for Wilbraham and Monson Academy, committed to the Hoosiers after an official visit to Bloomington. He received a scholarship offer from IU only in the past week.

"He reminds them of a cross between Steve Novak as a shooter and the IQ of Will Sheehey," Wilbraham and Monson coach Chris Sparks, who accompanied Hoetzel on his visit, told ESPN.com. Hoetzel attends the same school as former IU target Goodluck Okonoboh, who committed to UNLV earlier this month.

I also don't understand Creans infatuation with 3's (wings) we already have like 6 underclassmen "wings". We need an elite guard prospect.

We have Yogi, Stan, and Rob. Just need one guy on the court to run the point out of those three. The system Crean is running consists of having a pg and true big man (if needed), and then 3-4 wings who are long, athletic, and virtually interchangeable.

On what Crean told him when he offered a scholarship on Tuesday:

“He said that I’m all in for you and we want to get you down as soon as possible and we need you as a shooter. We need you as a player for us and all that, and you know, we want to offer you, we want to sign you.”

On how he gave his commitment to Indiana:

“We were all meeting and then coach Crean asked me, “How do you like it?” I told him that there’s no other place that I’d rather spend my four years at than Indiana. Stepping out onto Assembly Hall, I knew it right away. He was ecstatic and everybody was excited, too. It happened today, right after the Haunted Hall of Hoops.”
