(2017) PG Paul Scruggs to Xavier

Recommended Posts

Hats off to Emerson for sharing the above.    Unless it's the truly exceptional recruit does any coach honestly make this statement to a recruit, "They told me that I would start as a freshman...."    With what we know as outsiders at this time, it's pretty hard for me to envision CTC telling him that or quite honestly projecting that Scruggs would move ahead of this year's incoming guard recruits let alone over RoJo or JBJ should he stay (I've lost track does Newkirk have 1or 2 yrs. left?).

2 years for Newkirk. Rojo, Newkirk, Green, Cujo will be back (sans transfer). Blackmon, unlikely. Hard to see Scruggs special enough to steal a starting spot unless Newkirk is underwhelming.

If Newkirk came off the bench this season for RoJo or JBJ would he sacrifice personal goals to let RoJo and Scruggs start? Would he be willing to come off the bench two years in a row? How would CuJo feel about that?

My personal feelings are offering recruits guaranteed starting spots is dangerous but sometimes warranted to get talent. You need talent to win. If we could somehow land Scruggs, Waters, and Durham to go along with Newkirk, RoJo, and CuJo that is a ton of talent for the 2017-2018 season and then a solid backcourt for the 2018-2019 season.

I hope this doesn't drive a three guard lineup or possibly lose other recruits because they're not guaranteed a starting spot.

I should have added, is that what was actually said by CTC or is it what Scruggs thought he heard (or wanted to hear)?  Definitely an interesting article since supposedly there is a "to Xavier" announcement tonight.

It should be interesting. Xavier has blast onto the recruiting scene recently. I don't see where they could offer him anymore playing time with the returners and recruits they have. I guess recruiting and rosters are always fluid though.

Xavier is notorious for negative recruiting. That whole staff does it and is encouraged to. I'm not saying IU is above it, but people relay to me it's comical the lengths Xavier goes to. Works in some cases, I suppose.

I've been to Xavier. Anyone who would wanna go to that school over Bloomington when they offer the same thing is kinda crazy. Bias I may be but I see nothing that would draw me to Xavier unless they were offering something other schools weren't. But everyone is different.

Wow, I did some research and they haven't really "blast" onto the scene in recruiting. They had some good classes then a terrible class then same hood classes. They're solidly in that mostly 3-4 star range.

Chris Mack took over in 2009, this is compiled from 2010 forward.
