(2017) PG Paul Scruggs to Xavier

Recommended Posts

And he would but if you had 2 job offers 1 was for your dream job and another for one tier below your dream job which one is going to be more appealing to you?

I'm not sure Scruggs has ever mentioned IU being a dream destination. Kentucky was his dream school I believe.

Dream job in that analogy is Starting PG. Tier below is coming off the bench. Hence why we aren't his first choice.

Feel like Albers backing off his "almost guarantee not guarantee" with his "sources"

Gotta give yourself an out I guess...  Black and white much like blanket statements in a fluid environment just turns people off.  Albers is still young.  Maybe he will learn that some day.

From the Indy Star

If you missed it, Southport's Paul Scruggs (2017) has set visits to five schools. indy.st/2aPC3q3

Southport guard Paul Scruggs is focusing in on five schools and has set dates for official and unofficial visits to all five.

The 6-foot-4 Scruggs, ranked No. 31 nationally on the 247sports composite rankings, will take an unofficial visit to Indiana on Monday, followed by an official visit to Xavier from Aug. 5-7. He also is planning official visits to Michigan State (Aug. 12-14), UConn (Aug. 26-28) and Illinois (Sept. 2-4).

No idea, I would imagine it's because of the close proximity to Btown. He might be keeping an official just in case he wants to visit somewhere else. Hopefully IU rolls out the red carpet for this visit. He could be a very important cog in the machine next season and moving forward.

Interesting...  pap has been saying forever IU and Crean do really well with official, in this case semi-official, visits.  I wonder if this will be his last visit down to Btown or if he'll take another one after he's taken all of his other visits.

My guess is yes. Different players but being recruited for same position. I am worried about Waters size for 4 years. Am I alone? I know Yogi was small and a tremendous player but he still had his limitations due to size.

We've been tied to a small guard for 6 straight years. Yogi and Hulls were great so maybe I'm crazy but I'd like to have a taller guard if possible.

I'm not worried about it too much.  The size issue isn't as big of a deal in college as the NBA.  In the case of Hulls and Yogi we were trying to hide other minus defenders too.  I would be stoked to have Waters but would be just as happy to land Scruggs.  Scruggs will be learning the PG position, from what I understand, and Crean would be a fine coach to show him the ways of a PG at the next level.

Pap, when you get the chance, how would a Scruggs commitment to IU impact the Waters recruitment moving forward? Would IU be done with Waters?

No real info on these two specifically, but in looking at the situation...

We know Scruggs is looking to play and develop at the 1. We know Waters is clearly only playing the 1 in college. We know neither are likely one and dones. And we know that players absolutely do look at roster makeup with projected playing time in mind. So, from that view, there is certainly some conflict. I would say it would impact Waters decision, but that's more just piecing things together.

It's a tough situation. IU is in great shape with Waters, a true heady PG who projects to be in school for four years. IU is also in there with Scruggs, a top tier 4 star in your backyard who is the better talent, but plenty of questions about how he transitions to PG. Scruggs could be at IU 2-4 years... As a general rule, you take who says "yes" first, I suppose.

You also look at how Crean runs his offense. After Yogi; Troy, RoJo, and JBJ all spent a solid amount of time handling the ball. If something happens, as I project, with the guard situation after this season Waters and Scruggs could both find themselves playing a lot of minutes. Their sophomore year there will likely only be one guard with gaurs teed minutes in CuJo. It wouldn't be ideal but there is a path to having all three (Durham, Scruggs, and Waters) attend IU. Not likely but possible.
