“President Trump called Gianni Infantino, the president of FIFA, on Wednesday and asked him to review the suspension of the United States’ top goal scorer, Folarin Balogun, after he was given a red card in the team’s match that night against Bosnia and Herzegovina, according to three people familiar with the conversation,” the New York Times reports.

“On Sunday, FIFA announced that Mr. Balogun would be eligible to play Monday against Belgium after his red card ban was suspended.”

“The reversal is highly unusual and the first time since 1962 that FIFA has allowed a player to appear in a game when they would have been suspended. It also comes as Mr. Infantino has spent years trying to curry favor with Mr. Trump. Last year, FIFA created and gave Mr. Trump the FIFA Peace Prize amid the president’s public, but failed, campaign to win the Nobel Peace Prize.”

CNBC: Trump thanks FIFA after Folarin Balogun’s World Cup red card suspension is reversed.

Say it ain't so, Joe.  FIFA may be in charge of soccer, but they sure don’t have any balls.

They did this for Ronaldo last year.

Also, “FIFA sources insist White House influence could not affect the decision due to the powers contained in Article 27 and the independent nature of the disciplinary panel.”

Do I believe the decision was independent?  I don’t know.  No comment.

It will be interesting when FIFA answer questions on this and if Belgium has any effective recourse.

Discuss.

Great big dude beats great little dude. It’s the oldest axiom in sports and it will never change. That guy’s size/speed/physicality can’t be dealt with 1 on 1 by those guys.
