Potential over production. Is that a different approach than last year? I recall a lot of the guys coming in last year had a lot of production stats. Or am I completely wrong?

Also, can he play defense?

It's a different approach than last year for sure. And it's a lesson in the truism that no two situations are alike.

Football is a developmental sport with so many players on a roster and plenty of chances to miss on some players and still get plenty enough right to win. And the way to do that is to take excellent football production guys who mentally analyze info on the fly and then use their athleticism, and put 22 starters out there who work as a coordinated dance troupe.

Basketball generally (though again, no two situations are the same) requires very talented, high-usage, ultra-confident players and a bunch of role players around them. Last year's basketball team was built on a ton of very experienced players that should have been role players but weren't, and only one guy (Wilkerson) that was built for a starring role.

Those starring role guys are hard to find and even harder to get without an accomplished track record, so this year we are going after guys that are talented enough to potentially be lead guys, even if they haven't been yet.

Selling Harris on our system was likely relatively easy:

1. Show him a ton of Lamar Wilkerson tape because that is his direct comp out of high school.

2. Offer him starter money and the potential for 30mpg.

I have no doubt why he wanted to come, not convinced he's who IU should have pulled though. He feels like a reach...but that has been decided. Hoping he proves me wrong, but will feel a LOT better if IU gets someone else that can play the 2 in case he flames out.

Maybe. We did a lot of extrapolating last year and Woodys last year on guards who had average-ish shooting stats and said things like “wait until the looks he gets with Reneau down low” or “he shot it great his soph year.” Etc…. I mean this board was in love with Myles Rice. And probably 90% of those were sold on Conerway.

And we all thought Tuckers stats would translate over. So I’d say a mix of both. Which is where we’re currently at with the Burton addition, imo.

But Connerway and Rice were almost 180° different resumes.

Rice was a major conference freshman of the year, and Connerway was a small conference overachiever.

The common thing they had was terrible staff evaluation.

I didn’t compare their resumes. Only the fact that this board loved both as plug and play starters. And to get there you had to do a little extrapolation: “he’ll benefit from the scheme,” “everyone takes a jump in shooting from the frosh to soph yr”, etc…

The same is true of Harris. It’s perfectly rational to like his fit next year. I certainly trust the scout of Carr and a full staff more than Woody or Devries and last year’s staff at the time. I sort of doubt they prioritize a guy this early if they don’t think he’s getting at least 6th man minutes.

That is my concern. If he's replacing Miles? Ok, I can get on board with that. If he's supposed to replace Wilkerson though? I have my doubts. He's a Hoosier now, so I'm behind him, but I'm hoping for another big SG signee.

I don’t think anyone is going to replace Wilkerson in that sense because the team is almost assuredly going to be Burtons to run. It’s really impossible to judge these things without knowing how much they’re getting paid. I would guess with Harris’s pedigree and rumored list of suitors he was looking for starters mins and maj conf starters pay. Or maybe a 6th man, major mins off the bench type of role. But who really know?

If we get his teammate Khamenia this one is even better. lol.  Definitely seems like a risky move here.  Love the upside, but I have no idea how they have any idea in what they are getting here.  There isn’t any tape to grind, besides basically HS stuff. If the shooting is that pure, this current roster build needs that badly and he will carve out his role nicely.

This is a type of move that doesn’t move the needle in the offseason but could pay dividends. I have no idea what to expect.  6’5” shooter though. And Virginia wanted him and that coach knows his stuff, so that builds confidence.

How’s your general feeling so far. Think last season revealed you to be the best at being impartial on this topic

Sherrill would be a huge addition that lifts us a bunch. As it stands now, we are improved. By a fair amount.

Conerway/Enright vs Burton isn’t close.

Wilkerson vs Harris— Likely,Wilkerson much much better and effective. Still concerned about SG.

Mustaf vs Dorn-  Mustaf gives us so much more. Everything besides the shooting. Big advantage here.

Sherrill vs our Centers?  Not a good comparison on impact. Vastly improved.

I think even with Sherrill we need 2 more big pieces to feel really good.  But the vibes are high.
