the FBI coach and player arrests and investigation - sports gambling

Crazy, but ultimately a likely scenario when you go and allow big time sports betting. Chauncey Billups, currently HC of the Trail Blazers (ironically formerly often called the Jail Blazers), and player Terry Rozier, have been arrested in an FBI probe of sports gambling and rigged poker games, along with members of organized crime groups. Reportedly at least 30 people have been arrested. Billups apparently is named only in the poker operation.

and re the NCAA/college:

The NCAA has been engaging in its own long-term gambling investigation, noting last month that it is seeking violations for 13 unnamed former men's basketball players, with the athletes coming from six different schools. Three players at Fresno State and San Jose State were permanently banned from the NCAA last month as part of the gambling probe.

The NCAA has pushed states for more than a year to ban prop bets on college sports, mostly citing harassment of student-athletes, but is now pointing to the potential for athletes to manipulate stats. However, after previously cracking down on all betting, the association recently opened the door for students to bet on pro sports.

I'm sorry, it's freaking stupid to permit gambling/betting on college games, it spurs point shaving and other illegal gambling / betting activity.

This from today's NYT:

A pair of indictments unsealed in Brooklyn federal court on Thursday cast a pall over professional basketball, describing separate schemes in which three current and former N.B.A. players and coaches worked with other defendants to defraud gamblers and online betting firms out of millions of dollars.

One case accused an N.B.A. player and a former coach of trading inside information on a series of games to win hundreds of thousands of dollars of bets with sports betting companies. The other charged a well-known head coach, Chauncey Billups, with participating in a series of rigged poker games organized by Mafia families that cheated unwitting victims out of at least $7 million.

Taken together, the two indictments, involving more than 30 defendants, will compel the league to confront questions about how far the misconduct has spread, and whether those accused of financial crimes affected the outcomes of games.

The first indictment accused six defendants, including Terry Rozier, a guard for the Miami Heat, and Damon Jones, a former player and coach, of trading on inside information available to players and coaches to allow a network of conspirators to place winning bets on their games. Kash Patel, the F.B.I. director, called it the “insider trading saga for the N.B.A.”

Billups telling people that they were tanking and and letting them know of Injuries that weren't public will be the thing that buries him.

He should be done for good.

You’d think his .357 winning percentage would do it. But you are right

Jesus, I don’t know how much an Assistant Volleyball Coach makes but I’m gonna guess 327k might be a notable chunk.

That's how much he bet in aggregate lol.

And he didn't need to be an Indiana Assistant Volleyball Coach to know that betting against IUFB until Cig came was a winner, and betting for them since them is an even bigger winner.

Yep, my aggregate betting numbers are a bit shocking every time I look at them (I'm ahead lifetime...take that, Vegas!) and I'm not a big unit guy in the slightest. I'm nowhere near 327, but I could see how someone could be. That stuff adds up quick.
