Luke Goode (6’7” F) to INDIANA

Then there is obviously a reason for Indiana to think he'd get the year to begin with... I wonder what that is.

That's a stupid rule lol

Personally, I think redshirt rules should be more restrictive, not less.  The age of some players is way out of hand and it's another reason that high school kids are having trouble getting recruited.

well that's covid, more than anything...

Goode played 10 games-- 139 mins--- that should count?

With all the other shenanigans going on?

hell no it shouldn’t count. But I am curious as to the thought process on why he did play given the rule

From Illinois' side? My best guess here would be...there is no loyalty anymore whether it be from the player side or the staff side, nor should there be given how goofy this whole thing has gotten. Why would I go out of my way to protect your redshirt when you're more than likely not spending 5 years in my program? It sounds bad, but I just don't think coaches can afford to worry about those things anymore, so they might as well throw a young kid in the fire when they get the chance. Kick the can down the road and let that be another program's issue.

That's my take, anyway.

And all the more reason why some rules and regs have to be brought in to address this wild west that is today’s portal / NIL

Making shots in the summer hasn't been an issue, it's been making them during games which has. IU has had plenty of off-season snipers the past few years who couldn't make them when they counted. That said, he's been able to make them during games in the past so he should be able to at IU as well. The bigger question is will the volume be enough to really matter?

Bingo.  Sounds like Underwood wasn't looking out for his player.  He didn't play a game until February 11th.  Redshirt rule is very clear that a player can only receive a redshirt if they play less than 30% of the games, are actively rehabilitating, AND none of the games are in the second half of the year.  The fact that he played 10 games became irrelevant since they were all in the second half of the season -- the moment he stepped on the court February 11th, his redshirt was void even if that was the only game he played in.

With all the waivers the NCAA has handed out the last 5-6 years, I wouldn't be surprised if he got one if he actively pursued it.

There hasn't been a single waiver handed out for a guy playing multiple games in the second half of the season.

This is one of the few things the NCAA has actually been consistent with. I'm pretty sure they've already rejected a few of these this offseason and no reason to think anything will change on their stance before next offseason.

Yeah this thing is an absolute must watch watch; Luke is funny as hell, uninhibited, and most importantly at about the halfway point of the interview gives some insight as to what he’s seen from the roster so far.

Key takeaways?

Myles Rice is special. Not kinda special… really really really special.

Gabe Cupps is taking a big leap and is turning into a knockdown 3 point shooter.

Luke Goode says he knows Woody gets a lot of hate, but it’s bullshirt; Woody is an awesome coach who is great to play for.

Great interview for sure. Homestead product gonna make Ft Wayne proud. I think one thing our teams have lacked that doesn’t get talked about a lot is IQ. And not just basketball IQ. The 2012/13 team had it. This team has some of it. It makes a difference within a game, all of the time.

Love hearing about Rice. Ballo/Reneau are going to be tough. Mgbako could be great. I mean, on paper, just a crazy roster.

About Woodson. He opens up with a 7am practice today and Woody still being in New York. He does compliment him at the end but it’s nuanced about relationships and players liking playing for him. I and everyone wants to see on court coaching and winning but at least the players like him.

100% spot on.

Also interesting that Goode gave big props to an Illinois assistant coach but didn’t mention Underwood.

Very strong. Great kid and his optimism is obviously completely genuine.

Side note: Their recruiting theory that  “Gabe Cupps is that special at the bar scene in Bloomington” made me laugh out loud.

Most player coaches do!!!!  Player coaches lack structure, discipline, planning and accountability.  David Bell for the Reds is a players manager and he sucks in the things I mentioned.  Players love player managers/coaches because they let them do what they want

It was pretty funny.

The podcasters were trying to troll Cupps by pretending he’s the biggest stud on campus.

And then Goode responds that they don’t understand; Cupps really IS the best liked guy on campus, he’s in the gym every morning at 6:00 am, and Cupps and Goode have dinner together three times a week.

Do NOT DARE to underestimate the omnipotence of Gabe Cupps. Those podcasters truly looked embarrassed when Goode was gushing about Cupps.

Somewhere down the road that kid is gonna have a monster coaching career. Everything about him just screams it.
