From July 2023-

A new '26 name from Max Feldman, National Grassroots Scouting for MadeHoops.  He's reporting Gabriel "Gabe" Sularski, a 6'6" guard who attends Benet Academy in Illinois (Leann Beaumont's high school) and played AAU for Meanstreets 15U on the EYBL circuit will be on a UV October 21-23.

Haven't found much on him other than this from last month in a Chicago Sun-Times story on young prospects  --  "... Benet’s Gabe Sularski has been a name on prospect lists. He waited patiently at the sophomore level this past season while a senior-dominated Redwings team made a run to the Class 4A state championship game, falling to Moline.

It’s going to take some time and there will be hiccups along the way, due mostly to a need for weight, strength and added experience, but Sularski is on track to be a bonafide star down the road.  Sularski can shed a defense as a slasher, handle the role of distributor and, while it needs considerable improvement, is a capable shooter. He put it all on display this past weekend at R-B.

The highly versatile 6-6 guard is the headliner of a youthful but extremely talented Benet program."

His 15U Meanstreets team didn't qualify for Peach Jam but here's his stats for his 16 other games.

10.9p; 4.9r; 2.1a; .5s; .2b; 1.6t averaging 27 min./gm.   43% FG; 32% on 3s; 71% FT

I tried to follow his 23-24 HS season but could not find a source that followed his games and provided regular stats.  FWIW for 11 games he averaged 16.8 ppg.   The other stats I have are from such a limited number of games that aren't worth posting.

Earlier this week, he was named 2nd team all-state.

The evolution of the offense looks like, perhaps a legit 4 out. A Tucker/Haralson type of wing playmaker, a dynamic point guard that facilitates and can go get a bucket, two shooters with a couple of interchangeable bigs.

Now, we are recruiting more realistically. Chronicler, Weis, Grady, Sularski. An IU offer will hold some water with these players. They're strong foundational pieces. Until we can counter the negative recruiting that is happening against us and Woody is either replaced or proves he can succeed at the highest level we need to hit homeruns on a pair of these every year. Add a homerun or a spring 5☆ and buy the rest.

Open deep wallet and still have to settle. That’s saying something. Woody is not the coach to win with middle/upper talent. Oh well.

I am wondering how much of the money is tied to relationships with Woody vs in the Athletic Dept/Dolson. Would hope the same financial support can be there for the next staff, when the time comes

I think it’ll be there in spades.

I just hope Woody can win big and go out with dignity and respect. It’s got to be such an ego blow because in his mind he is the NBA caliber coach and superior and these hustling savvy college coaches are kicking his tail.

I also think our staff needs to come together and figure out what they want. Our assistant coaches seem divided. Yasir seems to have the best landing percentage, I guess. Walsh, seems to work his tail off but he’s brought us Cupps and Sisley so far and now whiffed on Mullins. I don’t know who to attribute Haralson too, but him being target #1 is a big blow.

Again, I love the portal and if we have a successful season most things settle themselves.

Woody handled Haralson himself.

Woody was given a punch list to complete when Pete Yonkman stepped in. Replacing a legacy coach and then doubling the NIL budget would've been a bad look. So Woody and the current staff have been given a level playing field and the majority of the country would say a financial advantage. He hit a homerun in the portal. He rebounded with Tucker, another Devine intervention recruit, but if Sisley is our class followed by a mediocre season I would anticipate Woody "stepping down" and a ton of Bruce Pearl talk.

The trouble is what defines a mediocre season?  1) If you determine that based on our success over the last 5 years or so, then the bar is much lower.  2) If you determine that based on what Woody has stated, BT and national championship contenders, then that bar is much higher.  Given the roster we have, the NIL $ Woody had access to, we should be closer to #2.  But like last year, Woody seemed pleased with what he has done as coach whereas most on here did not agree.

I would think a top 4 BT finish (if lower, then finals of BTT) and a minimum sweet 16 in NCAA tournament. Hopefully that punch list includes high expectations for on court results.

I'd go with option #2.  Given the "potential" of this year's team, anything less than a top two finish in the regular season big ten AND a share of the regular season big ten championship would be a letdown in itself.  I think no less than the final "four" in the big ten tourney AND a sweet 16 tourney appearance at a minimum would be right on par.

So, give me the following for it to be considered a successful season imo(obviously everyone wants a national title I get that):

- share of big ten regular season champ at a minimum(finishing one or two)

- final four team standing in the BTT at a minimum

- Sweet 16 appearance

- Appearing in the final game for "Battle 4 Atlantis"(IMO top three teams in no order are Gonzaga, IU and Arizona).  This one is a wild card for me.  If we "check off" the first three bullet points, then this bullet point is irrelevant to me unless they win.
