"If it happens again, he's gone, simple as that."

What a naive and simplistic way of viewing things. I guess some would not be bothered to have Indiana University's name in headlines for Beard's next act of drunken violence. The pictures of his badly beaten wife won't bother them either, as long as he's winning games. The cycle of abuse thrives on "give me one more chance"

Shame because Beard is a damn good at coaching basketball. Probably not a great leader of men. Not worth sacrificing your standards. Other coaches can help get us where we want to be. If that's holier than thou, so be it. I'll pray for you.

You say "you" and "your" here but I'm pretty sure you're talking to @IndyResident16 and not me so I'm confused why you quoted me instead of him. If you are addressing me, I think you should reread my posts to see where I stand on this. Hint: it's not in favor of Beard

Standards? He's literally paid to win basketball games.

Sorry I was just using you in the second person, not directed toward you specifically. I know you and I are on the same page :92:

He made a mistake that he'll have to live with forever. I'm not sure what that has to do with his ability to coach and teach the game of basketball? He's literally one of the best in the business as what he does.

This fan base and university tolerated RMK for 30 years until he no longer won, they'd do the same for Beard. Moral compass, so long as it is upheld WHILE employed, is not high on my priority list when hiring a coach who quite literally is paid to win basketball games.

So your argument is "winning erases all sins."

I can't disagree enough.

BTW, there is almost a 0% chance this was his first time and it's also unlikely that it will be the last. Getting to his age before striking a woman as badly as he did? So incredibly naive if you think that was a first or a last.

He let Johnson have it, and it's warranted. Also falls on Woodsin for not holding him accountable so he never learns.

Frankly I'd start Leal over him next game and let him sit for a while. If he's going to have his head in his arse then his arse will be on the bench.

Sit the rest of the season, that wouldn’t bother me a bit but he needs to at least sit the next 3 games.  He’s a team captain for christ sake, hold him to the highest standard because that definitely isn’t leading by example

A head coach at Indiana University is paid taxpayer dollars to represent the University and state and win basketball games while helping guide his players toward becoming contributing members of society. Beard can help you win basketball games but doesn't seem very good at the other parts of the job. Probably a better fit elsewhere. Will be glad not to be associated with his next DV incident.

Now, Bruce Pearl? Just hand him a blank check this offseason IMO.

I can separate Beard being a **** bag person and his ability to coach and win basketball games. Again, neither are mutually exclusive. I did the same thing with RMK. So did everybody else.

Chris Beard should be viewed as nothing more than a basketball coach.... Nothing more, nothing less. If IU wants to get serious about winning basketball again, they'll hire Chris Beard. Winning doesn't seem to be a priority so it's all moot anyway.

Then go hire Will Wade he's a cheater. I'm fine with a cheater but not someone who beats up on people who can't defend themselves

Let's be real, coaching salaries and buyouts are almost exclusively donor funded. I think almost everybody would unanimously agree that Bob Knight made it a point to turn his players into productive members of society and for the most part he did. I think most would agree that Bob Knight was a shitty human being. Can the same not be said for Beard? Bit hypocritical don't you think?

Knight didn’t have those issues when he was hired. He let his temper turn into physical altercations with other adult men after he was established here. So the difference is two-fold: 1) timing and 2) the act.

You may not agree with the latter part and I won’t engage in a long debate about. I engaged with enough people with domestic violence issues as a young attorney to develop a point of view where I don’t think a zero tolerance policy is enough for someone like him.

Hell, a zero tolerance policy wasn’t enough for Bob Knight. Since you brought up the Knight/Beard comparison, tell us  why you think such a policy would work for Beard when it didn’t work for Knight?

Uhhh.... no, I would not say at all we'd all agree Bob Knight was a "shitty" human being. Can't believe an IU fan is saying that?

He was rough around the edges and made plenty of mistakes, bad behavior, etc. We don't know him to have ever severely beaten his wife.

Even putting that to the side... so your logic is, because Bob Knight could do it, we should give Beard a chance too and just hope he doesn't do anything too violent or stupid to embarrass the University. Got it. This convo has run its course, pleasure as always Indy16

He assaulted law enforcement, was caught on tape choking one of his players, verbally and psychologically abused people for years. And I say that as a HUGE RMK fan. Sure he was very philanthropic and cared deeply for his players and that went a long way, but doesn't exclude his physical behavior. Stopping the line at assaulting your players, etc but not your gf/spouse is some kind of stretch.

Again, RMK's behavior was tolerated because of his ability to win basketball games. Nothing more, nothing less. It is what it is.

Simple: you violate your zero tolerance policy you're terminated and your buyout is voided.

He didnt' have any stars next to his name. He was a low 3 star recruit.

I am not talking about X in the last paragraph. Just stating that Woodson needs to look at more in depth things when recruiting players. Look at if they play with passion or is just going through the motions.  Look for guys who actually knows and sees the game at a high level. Guys who can shoot and score.

If we benched everyone that is terrible defensively would we even have 5 players on the floor?

I don't know who here listens to Fischer pre-game on the radio, but before the Nebraska game last week one of the walk-ons was interviewed and said he dreamed of playing for Purdue growing up and would catch Fischer after Purdue games on the radio while driving him home. So I don't know his name but I never want to see him on the court.

Yes, Mack basically fell into their lap. KW was the #1 center in the portal and is a unique, introverted kid who committed on his first visit. How much assessment actually went into those recruitments? Even the lower ranked guys on the roster - how did we evaluate that talent, because it doesn't seem to be a fit for this level/developed how it needed to be at the start of the year.

Based on who we return next year, it feels like Woody coaches the program on a season to season basis with whoever happens to be on the roster, rather than him building around his philosophy.

One other thing I will add I laugh to myself when I see people say that Xavier should be kicked off the team in one sentence, then in the next sentence say we should hire Chris Beard.

I personally would not play Xavier on Friday night. I personally would never hire Chris Beard.

I think X should be gone and I would never want Beard as coach at IU
