That was one thing I was excited about by having a top 5 sized lineup in the country.  Rebounding/offensive rebounding.

We might have length but we still ain’t got them dogs.

Length is great for rebounding near the rim, but not so much for rebounding out in space.

We were down 5 with a 50 seconds left in the half. We go into halftime down 1.

That intentional fouling is trickier than it looks. Gallo did it perfectly, but when left in the hands of an overwhelmed freshman it’s ugly.

I’m a simple man, need some help. I don’t understand the strategy to intentionally foul there in the first half, when OSU has timeouts and can just draw up a play in the huddle?

What advantage does that give us, that warrants letting a starter pick up a foul intentionally?

So okay then.

Yes, and with 10 seconds left we were gifted a chance to take the last shot of the half down 1. XJ goes early, gets fouled, makes two free throws. We go up 1. In the next 9 seconds we foul for literally inexplicable reasons.

Maybe it's not a master class in how not to end a half, but it's definitely a master class in how to not manage the last 10 seconds of a close game against an important conference opponent. Foul trouble is an issue for this team, we can't afford to do that willy nilly.

They all look confused about what they're supposed to/expected to do, as far as I can see. Hard not to have a sour taste in your mouth for only being down 1 after that sequence.

In theory and done correctly?

They had nine seconds to go full court.

If Mgbako doesn’t do stupid ****, Gallo fouls with 4.8 left, they have to inbound again, someone fouls with 2.0 left and they have to inbound again to get a very tough shot with no chance for a putback.

Moral of the story? Should have had Walker or Leal on the floor if that’s the strategy.

We were also up 1 with 5 seconds left in the half.

Regardless, I've never been a fan of fouling at the end of the half. Especially when it's your starters doing the fouling. What if you need those guys to not be in foul trouble toward the end of the game?

I guess I’d rather not give up the unnecessary fouls and live with them making a bucket there.

I can see where it makes sense in an end of game situation, but hard to justify the fouls at the end of the first half imo, especially if your starters are the ones fouling. Hope those don’t come back to bite us…

Yes Mgbako is ultimately the one who did something stupid. But when you've got a freshman in a late clock situation like that, the staff's got to make sure he clearly understands what the instruction is. Yes it's on him but he's clearly trying and there's clearly a miscommunication based on Woody's reaction. Who's not being clear? How do we figure out how to make things more clear for the kids? Coaches got to figure these things out. Would hope to be further along down that road by game 15.

I'm still firmly in the "its a long season, who knows what can happen" camp before opining on if Woody's seat should hot (it's not). But this is a really friggin ugly year.... so far! :)

Agreed. If we are going to do that, toss the fouls on someone that we can afford picking them up.
We weren’t sniffing foul trouble until that sequence.

Gotta bench MR he is killing us. Gunn has a very low basketball IQ, just make the easy play and take layup. You don't help off battle for a guy who wasn't going to go anywhere. Going to get ran out of the hall

If you're gonna have that strategy for the end of the first half, you've GOT to make sure the 5 guys going on the floor understand EXACTLY what the instruction is. Yes you can't control everything but it's just communicating clearly... to FIVE... guys. Mack's early foul screwed up the whole sequence. Now foul trouble is looming.

How is Woody gonna get us over that hump.
