Catch 22.  Not sure he wins without elite talent.  Gotta get it one way or another.

Not sure I would say he wins with top talent either. He had one of the best players in all of college basketball and a first round draft pick point guard complemented by a senior led supporting cast and didn’t win the bigten and didn’t win the bigten tourney and won 1 game in the round of 64.

I'm willing to let this season play out. I'm also willing to let people evolve and grow. Can CMW do that? I don't know but he is not the only one looking at the program and wanting better results. I also believe that he honestly cares about IU basketball. So, this season will tell us everything we need to know.

That’s where I’m at. I want to see this team meet expectations and more…more than anything. The recruiting will sort itself out, but seeing CMW and co. have a successful season will make the potential Mullins & Reibe miss sting less.

Jim Coyle looked at the last 6 Natty winners and each of them had at least 4 (four) guys that were drafted by the NBA. Many coaches, including Saint Hurley, need elite talent.
It kind of sickens me to say this but PU did a good job making the final with just one, maybe two, NBA draftees.

In a brand new era of the wild west portal and the diva insanity of teenage boys thinking they're worth 1.5 million dollars while simultaneously struggling with the idea of leaving mom and dads house, I truly believe Woody is the perfect coach for us. He had no idea what the requirements of college coaching were. His "advisors" had no clue. So he took a staff of losers, none had ever been a head coach, and Forrest Gumped his way into the world of recruiting. Devine forces have handed him, Bates, Reneau, Mgbako and Tucker. Hunter has brought in JHS, Walsh Cupps, Rosemond...a guy who is now at Tulane and Newton. For a decade we have been completely irrelevant and just missed the tournament. YET, a cashnado  just blew through Bloomington and we have a loaded roster. We are being led by a devout Christian PG who defeated cancer. Woody is figuring it out and it may or may not require some staff adjustments, but I see progress and providence on our side brothers.

I can see this, to be honest. Gotta trust your roster building and value associations. Gotta get guys that share a vision.

I’d advise against recruiting against UConn in the future as Hurley has our number right now.

And his energy is probably very effective with that sales pitch of winning right now.

I’d say, who we target might need altered, but also Hurley is just cherry picking guys we are interested in, so it’s an ‘insult to injury’ situation going on.

There is probably a reason that Woodson's pitch is resonating more with players in the transfer portal as opposed to 17/18 year high school seniors.  Portal transfers have been around the block and are probably more likely to view this as a business while 17/18 year old kids are more into the 'love' that they are receiving.  Just my opinion, but it's more likely that the 'you aren't ready for the league and here is what you need to improve on' approach works better for players that have been around the block as opposed to high schoolers.  I do remember that TJD said he returned to IU because Woodson told him things that he didn't want to hear but needed to.

I hope we land Reibe, although it sounds unlikely, but in this climate it really doesn’t matter.
Don’t land a HS big…Oh well, go shopping at the “big man store” after the season. Odds are very high that we will land a seasoned portal big man more “ready to go” than Reibe.

I agree. As vocal as Reibe has been about 'playing time' I'm a little concerned promises are being required. Other than a very few elite level big men, starting a true freshman isn't a recipe for success. Shopping the portal for a couple more seasoned posts makes more sense, especially with IU"s recent success at the position. So I'd like to get Reibe, but not if he is demanding 25mpg.

I agree. High school players asking for or demanding promises of playing time without competing for or earning the minutes completely turn me off.

No one that we’re prioritizing comes out and demands a promise of playing time from us.

Every player that we’re prioritizing very much wants to envision a path to early playing time, and we should be ready to show that path.

Maybe we get Kory Bidunga when Bill Self’s promises to him turn out to be lies. But yeah, the 5 spot had me worried. We have no returners and I don’t want our season to rely on a freshman Moreno, Reibe no matter how solid they might be long term. But shopping portal bigs without devolving any Is going to be mighty costly.

I can guarantee that we won't be relying on freshman Moreno as our center next year.

Yeah, worded poorly.  I meant didn't want to rely on a freshman 5 man and Moreno/Reibe have been our 5 targets thus far.  I think the staff knows and is indicated with Ballo, TJD, Ware they will put a priority on the 5.
