What's the consensus on how many minutes he played?  I think it was no more than 16 and he turned in a very impressive performance while he was in the game.  15 pts; 4 reb; couple of steals and a couple of blocks.

I no more than post the above and Alec Lasley tweets the following:  Unofficial stats for Jakai Newton tonight -- still on a minute count in his 2nd game back: 17 pts on 7-of-10 from the field, four rebounds, two blocks and two steals.

I’d guess 12. He played 5 mins in the 1st half and maybe 7 in the 2nd.

I don't know but yeah around 16min though. Man is he built! Looks as big as JHS or even bigger. Already a B10 body with some serious hops! Handles the ball well also.

Yeah, Newton will be the best athlete to hit campus since Oladipo. Have watched him a lot, and when he’s playing with full abandon he makes really good athletes look unathletic. And the thing is, he’s 17. He’ll play his entire freshman year as a 18 year old.

Great performance. He needs more minutes as soon as he can handle them.

Collier was super impressive. Almost always is. Page looked solid and Castle very impressive too. Very athletic game.

Hope Collier is only around for a year! Hate to see what he will be able to do as a sophomore against us lol!

Zero chance he plays more than a year. Might favorite prep PG in a long, long time. His vision and processing speed are just rare. That underhand pocket pass he threw was unbelievable. Not that many guys see that play, but nobody makes that delivery like that. Amazing.

For those who saw the stream:

  • Did Jakai seem to be favoring his recovering knee in any way?
  • Did he look like his explosiveness has all but completely returned?
  • Is there any definitive take on what the injury was? I have read that it was stated to be a meniscus tear, but I find it hard to believe that he'd miss eight months with that - would think eight months = acl tear.

1) On a couple of landings it looked like he might have been cushioning it a touch.

2) He looked great. I don’t remember him exploding off of 1 foot at any point, but off 2 feet and from a movement perspective, he was what I’m used to seeing.

3)  Curious about this, too. Would be shocked if it was just a meniscus. Even exercising an abundance of caution that’s not an 8 month recovery.

agree.  He looked good.  I believe the announcers mentioned it was an ACL injury, but I could be mistaken.  He liked the pull-up game and hit several nice looking shots.  He didn't care to get back on defense towards the end when Wheeling went on an even bigger run.  I thought that was odd.  One possession where it wasn't an easy layup his team played 3 on 5 for an extended stretch.

Caught that too. Also, late in the game they subbed him O for D a couple of times. No idea why you would do that.

They corrected themselves a little later and clarified it was a meniscus.

I call bullshirt.

From the Cleveland Clinic:

What is meniscus surgery recovery like?
The recovery time for meniscus surgery depends on the type of surgery you had. It takes longer for a meniscus repair to heal than a meniscectomy. Full recovery from meniscus surgery can take anywhere from six weeks to three months.
