Indiana vs OSU Game Thread - 8/31 @ 8:00ET on ESPN

Not doing my synopsis because a lot has already been said. However....here's some quick points  

For people who dogged Lagow  

lagow is still our QB. He had some throws with great touch and placement. Second half the line didn't help him at all really and he reverted back to dumb decisions here and there. Has to stop that. The first pick the DB somehow got a hand on the ball with his momentum taking him the other way.

running.....I just wish we tried to do a stretch or toss with our faster guys....we tried to run it down 7 first round draft picks throats on OSUs line  

westbrook- he has always been on Special teams, even last year as a starter. He wasn't a projected starter for this game, yes he is a returning 1000 yard receiver but he's played special teams since at IU...nothing new....

defense- hats off for great first half.....last 23 mins....hello bill lynch era lookin a**.  Walk the walk boys. Got a lot to change to be a top 25 D.

Crowd-great turnout...however just because it's bedtime doesn't mean get quiet. I got so many texts from buddies saying why is it so quiet... First half couldn't hear color commentary...

on to UVA... Let's go boys.

That first pick was crucial on Lagow. He waited way too long to throw it and then telegraphed the pass giving the defense time to make a play. If we score there it puts us up 14-3. Instead Ohio State comes down and kicks a FG. Overall though he impressed me a lot just has to cut down on costly TO's and learn to throw the ball out of bounds when he is heavily pressured because that is when he forces things and makes bad decisions. 

Doesn't make things any better that Westbrook was on ST last year although it is interesting to point that out. That's even more absurd considering he was by far our most productive offensive player after Simmie went down. We should have more than enough guys that can play on ST without risking injury to one of our playmakers on offense. I won't speculate but the injury didn't look good. Hoping it's a meniscus or something of that extent.

Something that I noticed with Lagow last night that I really hoped would improve was he still stares down his first read for like 6 seconds and doesn't really have a second. It's very easy to see who he's going to throw to.

Absolutely. Westbrook is a very good wide receiver that "picked up the slack" when Cobbs was hurt last year. IMHO, those types (talented) of players for IU shouldn't be on special teams. IU can't bring in very many, if any, highly talented players off the bench like most of the football factories in the Big Ten East.

This may not be a popular opinion, but I thought Lagow looked just like last year. He'll make some beautiful throws which is where those annoying NFL comparisons keep coming from (come on people really??), and don't get me wrong I love seeing that. But even after that hot start I kept telling my friend let's just see how he finishes this game. Sure enough, the Lagow we all saw last year showed back up. He stares down one receiver, never goes through his progressions, is absolutely a loose cannon in the pocket with no ball security, forces the most absurd throws that even high schooler's know better than to make, and even though this isn't on him can we please stop calling running plays for him??

I will be the first to admit he had a lot of pressure on many plays due to the o-line, but this guy's gotta know how to just get rid of the ball and live to another play and he just hasn't ever figured that out and at this point I'm giving up hope he does. As Tim said I wouldn't blame this game on him, but he is going to continue to kill us in big games with his lack of ball security. He had 3 TO's but it should have been 4 and maybe even 5 depending on if you think that shove to Simmie was a fumble or not.

Well, we fell apart late 3rd... But I'm excited. We NEED a running game badly, we had to throw it almost every play...

 

Also, damn Simmie Cobbs is going to have a hell of a year. Imagine what he would have done if OSU couldn't blow up our offensive line every play?

I think everyone is forgetting we had Shane Wynn do punts for us when he was a top receiver on the team. Why is it so surprising that Westbrook was on Special Teams? We just put an impact player on special teams in hopes of making a play and he got hurt, it sucks but it happens.

Returning punts or kickoffs is certainly one thing if you are the best at it on the team but just covering a kickoff? C'mon. You don't think someone else can step up and do that on the 85 man roster? I've never heard of a top receiver covering a kickoff. I'm sure other teams do it but it's not common at all.

Westbrook got hurt on the kickoff team though. I totally understand having a guy like Shane Wynn returning kicks/punts to get the ball in his hands to make plays, but we were kicking off when he got hurt. There's no reason to have a talented receiver out there in that situation. Surely there's someone else on the roster that could've filled the role.

Said it right before I did. There was no reason for Westbrook to be out there.

Oh I didn't see the first quarter of the game so I didn't see it. I must have misunderstood what people were saying. That changes my stance on that injury then.

Yeah it sucks to lose Westbrook, but I am completely fine with the duo of Hale/Cobbs on the outside. Both of them were winning their battles vs one of the top secondaries we will face. This game was lost in the trenches.

Lagow didn't look all that improved to me. He made some great throws here and there but credit to the wide receivers for going and getting the ball. The pick was bad (there were a handful of other throws that could have easily have been intercepted).

The interception in the end zone is an absolute momentum killer. I'm not upset that we didn't score a TD there. I'm upset that that ball wasn't thrown a little higher. It's your receiver gets it or it goes out of bounds. We kick a field goal and we're up 7 (I believe).

Lagow can still have a great season but he can't be careless with the ball. The O-line needs to give him more time too. Lost the TO battle against a better team and you lose the game.

I hope the record setting tv overnight and streaming ratings for the game gives IU In general and IU FB specifically good exposure and helps with recruiting. We did some good things that first half ---we need some more horses to get us where we want to be....

I didn't say he was drastically improved, but I thought he looked a little better.  I thought his accuracy was better than last year, which granted is a low standard, for the little time he had.  Still had his share of WTF moments, like the red zone pick and the would've been pick 6 that an OSU DB knocked way from his own teammate.
