As soon as I think of all these names flying around and some not really setting well with me, I catch myself realizing that we don't really know what these coaches could do with the resources at Indiana.  Sure we can watch their current teams.  Or judge their records in and out of the tournament.   But we truly don't know what they could accomplish in the realm of what IU brings to the table.  Point being, their current situation could be holding back their full potential as a coach.  And unfortunately,  alot of times finding the right fit is a trial and error type of thing.  Reality.

This is true.  The best candidate could be a relative unknown or a young unproven coach.  He could also be a total flop.  Past performance is probably the most reliable predictor of future success (and still with no guarantees).  I suppose to an extent it's a crapshoot with whoever is chosen, but at least you can have a good idea of who will satisfy and invigorate the fanbase initially.

I shared the belief (hope?) that a decent coach who came here could up his game as far as recruiting goes when CTC was hired.  Yet, I'm not so sure he's attracted a significantly better share of the talent pool here than he did at MU.  Recruiting, in state especially, is definitely a factor in choosing a replacement coach and assessing that capability probably takes a lot of research and guesswork.

I don't think enough attention is given to Greg Marshall. He is an Elite coach. His Winthrop teams nearly pulled off some historic upsets against top seeds in the Tournament. Moving up a level, to Witchita State, he has elevated his success further. He has made the final 4 as a 9 seed and the sweet 16 as a 7. His "down" years still include tournament appearances and conference titles. Given IUs resources, i think he would replicate his success in the BIG 10. He would be a home run hire.

Tier 1: Stevens, Donovan

Tier 2: Marshall, Bennett

Tier 3: Miller, Collins, Few, White

Tier 4: Disappointments

We shouldn't settle for anyone outside of the first 3 tiers imo. I think they would all be successful at IU. If we could get anyone in the first 2 tiers, it would be a home run.  We would be viewed as elite again. Stevens and Donovan are both unlikely, but Marshall or Bennett would consistently compete for BIG titles and high seeds in the Tournament. We would have a shot every year.  We would be the premier program in the BIG 10 again. I think that's what everyone wants.

IU didn't treat his sister, Kathi, well as a coach in the family's eyes. He didn't consider IU the first go around due to it.

Yes, IU>VA now add in Wiscy could be a possibility the way they are skidding. Maybe not this year, but it could open and losing him could be be feasible. I do like him better than others being discussed though.

Putting myself in Bennett's shoes, I could definitely see how IU would leave a sour taste in my mouth after what went down with his sister. We're definitely biased about being the best job he could land, and who knows, he may love it at Virginia and be a lifer. Money doesn't always talk for some people if they're in a comfortable situation.
