TOM CREAN FIRED

Has Tom Crean been preaching position-less basketball, or ROLE-less basketball. Can that explain why it looks like Bryant doesn't know what position he is supposed to be playing, and why It looks like Rob Johnson doesn't know his own role on the team (same with Newkirk)... At what point do you realize this strategy doesn't work. Our players need roles... Please fire this man.

At the point that CTC learns that not turning the ball over is more valuable than a deflection or that playing solid defense consistently wins championships more consistently than the crap defense that he keeps putting out on the floor...that is when he will learn that position-less basketball doesn't work...

Yep. If I remember right we were pushing hard but it became clear Anya was going to NC State. Within a week we landed Vonleah.

I believe even after Anya knew he wasn't coming to IU he was tweeting about wanting to come here or something like that. I remember IU passing on Anya more than the other way around.

The one we missed in that class is Meeks. He is a great outlet passer and would have been great getting things started by dishing it out to Yogi or Troy.

If he hasnt learned by now its getting a little late. He obviously did not learn a ton from izzo.

In Creans defense haven't heard him brag up deflections in a while. Why can't we try slowing down and running a offense and not turning the ball over. Why insistence on same thing over and over? Good teams can play more than one way we don't have that under crean. Needs to change now

A ton?  There's times it's questionable if he learned anything at all.

I would like to hear his honest answer on this. I don't know if he believes his system is superior to others, (Coaches at this level have huge egos) if he doesn't know any other way (not playing the game), or some other reason.

My opinion is it's a combination of not having a great feel for the game and having a huge ego. He doesn't put his players in the best situations to succeed to win games at IU.

When you have a shooter as good as JBJ you run off-ball screens to get him open. Why is Calbert Chaney the all time B1G leading scorer? Those teams would wear opponents out with off ball screens to free him for good open looks.

I will give Crean credit for running more high-low with Bryant/Morgan to Davis but then he stops going to it or doesn't design something off of that.

I would love to see JBJ setting an off-ball screen for Morgan coming to the free throw line with David getting position in the post and JBJ flaring to the wing. Run these sets until opponents stop it. Having OG back cut on the opposite baseline gives you another option.

To me the most interesting thing about the Tom Crean situation was mentioned pages ago: he will only have 3 years left on his contract and as a college coach you really need a 4 year contract for recruiting.

This is a tough spot for Glass. If he extends Creans contract to a rolling 4 year deal, he could lose a large portion of the fanbase. If he chooses not to extend his contract, then you are potentially damaging Creans recruiting capabilities. Which means the writting is on the wall and you shouod go ahead and part ways. Which is ultimately what I think will happen.

I see no upside to extending Crean. So i think Glass will take a pass. Crean will see the writing on the wall amd leave for a football school, like Buzz Williams did at Marquette. Get out before youre forced out. That might mean Creans stays one more season, but the end is near.

Whenever the job comes open, Stevens will be the first asked. Its up to him. If he says no, then we at least have closure from the shadow of Brad Stevens. That shadow might be the biggest thing haunting Tom Crean at IU, that includes his questionable coaching.

I think glass would love to extend him but the fallout might be to big. I believe crean is pushing for an extension now and if he does not get it he moves on after this season. No way he coaches here next year without his extension imo.

I dont believe Glass would love to extend him. I think Glass has been playing the Stevens waiting game. Like Pap said earlier, waiting for that perfect hire. The problem is, life happens, and timing is never perfect. While there is only one perfect fit and he will get the first call, there are many coaches who are better than Crean that IU can get.

Yep. The perfect hire is something you grab If the opportunity presents itself but you can't wait for it. Especially when it means your stuck with Ton Crean for even 1 more season.

Their are multiple coaches in just the state of Indiana better than him. Extending it to a national stage there are probably dozens better at schools we can outbid.

First options are of course Stevens and Donovan of course. You break the bank for either of those guys if need be.

This is a fair argument. Word was last time this discussion came up was that Stevens wouldn't even consider the job if Crean was still there, out of respect. Maybe it's time to take the plunge, but there better be a realistic backup in place, not some wildcard mid-tier coach.

To me timing is such a big issue with Stevens and why I dont have my heart set on getting him. IF (big if) you fire Crean after the season around the first part of April the NBA season is still going on for a good while. Just dont see us waiting around til May or June to hire a coach.

Unless this season really really implodes, I fully expect CTC gets a contract extension.  It's an unfortunate way of life in college sports, but it can be a recruiting drawback if the head coach can't assure a prospective recruit that he'll be there for the recruits 4 years.  Of course, 90% of the kids today don't expect to be in school beyond 1 year but that's beside the point.  To me, the length of the extension will tell us a lot.  If it's for additional multiple years, then it will be clear Glass has really hitched his wagon to CTC.  However, should it only be a 1-year extension, that would suggest to me that CTC is wearing out his IU welcome with our AD.

A 1 year extension is just an admission he is a lame duck coach. Crean is already struggling in recruiting.

To borrow a phrase from General Garrison(Battle of Mogadishu) Crean lost the initiative.

Each failure makes it harder for him to have successes and its becoming a vicious cycle.

Its time to move on at this point running the risk of giving the wrong guy a 3 year deal is less of a risk than giving Crean 1 more year.

At least a new coach would bring renewed excitement for a season or 2.

I agree with most of this, but I don't think a 2-3 year extension means a whole lot as long as the buyout isn't something outrageous. If the fine print terms are crazy like his current contract, then that's probably not good regarding being able to cut ties, but if it's a pretty standard agreement then I don't know that the length means much. Unless it's like 6-8 years or something lol.
