I think this is a really good take in the situation

Is IUBB where we want it? Clearly not.

That being said, it's not a dumpster . Respectable is right. Granted we don't want respectable, we want to be competing for championships. Some could argue that respectable is mediocre and I couldn't argue with them but I think your right, changing just to change isn't the right thing to do. When the dream hire comes, go get them.

Thanks for the dose of reality.

Agreed. I certainly will not argue with anyone that "respectable" is acceptable, but I am certain this fanbase would not find a program run like Kentucky or Louisville acceptable either, despite their impressive success.

I think you accurately answered your own question:

Yes - there is really a chance, but because of the clean program, past few years of conference success, and quality wins this year, only under the conditions you described.

The buyout at $4 mil which soon drops to $1 mil has become an enabling factor that allows IU to move on if they so desire. After this season, CTC's contract has three years remaining. For a future four year recruit, that is relevant. Methinks that after this season, it will start to become "extend or not" decision territory.

That $1MM buy-out number won't look so large if this turns out to be a disappointing season. At least I hope... Incredibly frustrating as a long time die-hard fan to see the same talent laden teams fall trap to Crean and Co.'s asinine coaching. Horrendous ball control and half court offense, lack of sense of urgency on defense, and an in-game rotation of players that looks more like the line for the Salt-N-Pepper Shaker ride at the Maryland (Indiana) State Fair than a Big Ten basketball team.

Don't get me wrong, I strongly believe this is a tournament team.. But a first or second round exit isn't going to cut it.

I was watching the Louisville game with my sister's bf and it made me realize how apathetic  I've become towards iubb. He was upset for most of the game like I would've been 2-3 years ago, but I was indifferent because it's the kind of game that I've come to expect under Crean. I still love the program, but losses don't affect me like they used to.

Me x 100. After the Syracuse game, my love of IUBB has diminished.

Id argue that hiring another coach outside of maybe a three person dream hire short list would be the definition of insanity. Change for the sake of change isn't always good. At least with Crean we can be fairly confident of a few things:

1) Recruiting will be above average
2) We will have success in the B1G
3) We will make the tournament
4) We will win really big games on national television
5) We will have a high character team and a clean program

I don't see anyone out there currently worth the risk, but I also don't have all the resources and information available to find the right hire. Crean has the program operating at a very respectable level, and biding our time for the right hire could result in 30 plus years of positive return, instead of another 10 year coaching hire that leaves fans restless.

I have to disagree with this. It is not till the last year or so that we have had a high character team. Before that there were so many off the court issues. If he can keep it like it is then good for him but it takes more than 1-2 years to prove that to be a fact.

Recruiting is starting to fall off also, and still no future PG.

I hear you, but if you look at all years outside of that 2012 and 2013 recruiting class, we have recruited high character kids. Those years, it seems like Crean varied from his approach. But your point is absolutely valid, and my fifth point is certainly debatable.

Agree to disagree regarding recruiting falling off.

While I agree with both sides of this. I just don't want to get rid of Crean just like that. I really would hate to get rid of a coach and then get stuck with someone who is worse. We would have to have someone lined up who fits this program and can take us to the next level.

Also here's the thing, this brad Stevens thing is a long long shot it just is. So who the heck do we get, I've seen the suggestions on here but I'm just not sold on them. We really need a win tonight, I'm hoping we can turn this thing around, and it is still early so here's to hoping for a better season from here on out

Probably not the correct thread, but I heard Russillo mention a "what if" today. He was talking about Jay Bilas being a college coach.

What are your thoughts?

I think it would be nearly impossible for IU due to lack of experience, but I think he checks a lot of boxes. I also think he would not get into coaching unless he was offered a DUKE, IU, UK, Kansas position so it will likely never happen. But would love to hear what people think about him being a college coach?

Egomaniac - I'd pass and why he'd want to give up the gig he's got is beyond me.

You don't have to keep a bad coach for a decade.  Something Glass could learn

I think fans have a much different definition of bad/fireable than pretty much every AD with a job.

He hasn't met what SHOULD be the expectations for 9 years and frankly it was pretty obvious after 5 he wasn't the guy

Frankly he should have been gone after the year we missed the NIT

I would've given him the next season, although missing the NIT with 2 McDs AAs should be inexcusable.  After that team completely refused to play even a semblance of defense I would've given him the boot.

To me this like buying a car when you aren't forced into it due to it breaking down. Like the Cubs. They hired a solid guy for one year and then Madden became available unexpectedly. IU has to be opportunistic on the next hire and not wait on Crean to do something unexpected. Possible yes, but probably not. If something were there Glass needs to make the move IMO.

The coaches we'd all want will never be 'available' in the sense that they're waiting by the phone waiting for a program to call, they'll almost certainly already be a coach somewhere.  We have to be willing to take the chance that they'd make a move, not assume they wouldn't come here, that's where back channels come in.

What makes for a "home run" hire? Is there any doubt a guy like Mack couldn't do as well or better than Crean? There are many Mack's out there, just using him as an example. We are top 10 in every category that is of interest to a coach: history, salary, fanbase, facilities etc. compare those things to the Xavier's, Butlers etc and tell me that with those things on their side, they wouldn't do as well or better than Crean. They are already on par with much less support. This isn't a 1 man or bust thing. There are at least 10 guys out there that are performing as well as Crean at schools that offer very little to coaches, players, fans and recruits... So what is the big concern about, I only see upside, worst case we get more of the same
