Closer look at Indiana's Losses

Recommended Posts

I thought it would be interesting to take a little deeper dive into Indiana’s season.  Obviously it hasn’t been good, but has it really been as bad as the 17-14 record indicates?  I decided to go through the schedule and analyze the last 5 minutes of every game to see how the games played out.  It’s actually crazy looking at how close so many of these games were down the stretch.  We REALLY missed some senior leadership in these games.  Have to think Hartman would have helped us pull out a couple of these.

Indiana Season.png

Close Games we won:

1.       Kansas:  Hit 16/18 free throws down the stretch. Key here is we went to the line 18 times as we were aggressive and didn’t sit back and rely on threes.

2.       Penn State Gm 1:  Horiffic melt down leading by 8 with 1:18 to go.  Shot 2/7 and 4 turnovers before JBJ bailed us out with a late 3 to win.

3.       Penn State Gm 2:  Missed so many free throws down the stretch of game and first 2 overtimes.  Shot 4/10 from the stripe before going 10/10 in 3OT to run away with the game.  Also had a boatload of dumb late turnovers.

4.       Northwestern – Shot well from the field and stripe, only 1 turnover.  NW imploded.

Close Games we Lost:

1.       Fort Wayne – didn’t score in final 4:13 of overtime, shot 2/11 and had 4 costly turnovers.  We beat ourselves.

2.       Butler – Cut the lead to 2, shot 33% and had a really rough out of bounds call on us.

3.       Nebraska – Missed front end of 2 one and ones.

4.       Wisconsin – late turnovers after we cut the game to 3.

5.       Maryland – 3/7 shooting in final minutes, missed front end of a one and one.

6.       Iowa – Obviously the worst collapse we had (while not winning).  Led by 2 with 3:31 to go and committed 6 turnovers while missing front end of a one and one while shooting 42%.  Free throw discrepancy here was ridiculous.  Also Iowa capitalized by making damn near every free throw.

d7.  Minnesota - Horrible break here by a horrendous last second shot bailed out by lack of JBJ boxout and put back win.

Conclusion:

We beat ourselves a ton.  Most of the time it wasn’t the other team outperforming us, it was us not closing games.  Senior leadership was really missed on this team in crunch time.  We’ve lost 9 games this season where we were right there down the stretch within the final 2 minutes.  Let’s just say the ball bounces the other way in a couple of those games.   4 game swing would have us sitting at 21-10 going into the Big Ten Tournament.  Not where we want to be, but a much different feeling for Hoosier nation than we currently feel.  Only 5 of our 14 losses have been definitive losses where the other team beat us.  9 losses we beat ourselves down the stretch.  Will be interesting to watch the Big Ten Tournament if our offense is clicking like it was today.  I actually hope we play on Wednesday to pick up another win and gain some confidence to make a potential run.

This applies more this season than most… Indiana is our most dangerous opponent.  We can beat anybody... including ourselves.

PS
I want us to win out and make the tournament.  I think our coach decision won’t be impacted by the rest of this season so let’s get behind the boys and win some damn games!

You really want to play with fire. Winning out would give fred to much reason to think this over.

And we seem to not have many players stick around for their senior year.

2017 - Hartman (eligibility not up)
2016 - Yogi (Bielefeld, Z3 transfers in)
2015 - no seniors
2014 - Sheehey (Gordon transfer in)
2013 - Hulls, Watford, Elston
2012 - VJIII, Moore, Pritchard, Roth

We have another whole recruiting class over the last 5 years compared to the rest of the B1G while having few seniors. It's a convenient excuse but shows yet another reason why we're not in a good place.

I'd say no seniors/senior leadership is not an excuse … it's an indictment.

Although we don't have seniors, we do have upperclassmen that should be leading but ...

This is something that bugs me about the recent era of IUBB. Where are the alpha dogs on these teams?! Who on this team would you choose based on a "I'm not going to lose" attitude. Bryant might be the closest and furthest away at the same time. It took Yogi until his senior year before he stepped into that role. Crean wants a team full of leaders yet doesn't have a single one playing this season. That's unacceptable.
