TOM CREAN FIRED

Time for my famous comments: I haven't been happy with him, but he deserves one more year before him being fired should truly be an actual situation. Crean has been amazing for our program, and we should all be grateful for what he's done. However, I'm just as upset as anyone this year, and he has to prove himself more than ever next season. Another NCAA Tourney miss will most likely lead to his firing. All in all, he deserves until the end of next season.

  2. I wouldn't fire Crean at this point until I felt sure there was a coach I considered to be an upgrade to be "waiting in the wings" so to speak. You could easily downgrade from Crean and take the program even more south. Its crucial that the next hire is the right one.

....... There is a thread made out for Steve Alford. Do find it hilarious that people are going to whine and moan about Crean's limited postseason success then they easily gloss over the fact that Alford is horrible in the NCAA tournament.

Much of my frustration as a fan was during the season before Zeller got here. That was really the first year in the half court I noticed issues. Those issues were the source of many debates over the last 4 years. Crean's offense is built for players to make plays. The problem with that premise at times you have players trying to do too much trying to improve their stock. If you don't have a group that is very smart, and tight you get what you got this year for us. Defensively, I think he tries over thinking things. The UM game this year is what happens when the stars align. You give them something they have never seen. But why do we always have to do that on that end? Why can't we get our players to understand assignments and what to do when different situations happen? Both ends of the court are like a Technical Calculus class. Hard. Very hard. You can pass, but you won't do great unless the stars align. At the offensive end we must score in the first 5-10 seconds. If not there is a lot of confusion when there is a defender in front of the offensive player. I would personally prefer Crean to run some form of the flex we ran at UM. That was beautiful. I don't think we will have the basketball IQ on a consistent enough level to run a motion. If we do, then it is on Crean confusing them. I think we have the athleticism to dive to the rim, while having the shooters pop out typically. We don't use our bigs in the post. I like getting smart bigs who could get the ball at the free throw line and have people cut off of that. I just like having options that have players getting to the rim. It just opens up so much without dribbling nonstop. I am of the mind that the leash is shorter than we expected heading into next year. I also think it would be best for Crean for us to not make the NIT. If we have another bad outing after how this season went/ended, it wouldn't be good for him.

The same was said about the '09 class after 2 years. Creek hadn't played due to injuries. Watford was very similar to Jeremy, but scored more due to necessity. Most thought Jordy was too small to be a player at IU. I am not saying this class will be that, but I think any class that has Yogi on it, can't be considered a disappointment. This is a 4 year class. If players like Hanner get their head straight, and go to the gym, people's perception will change in a hurry.

  13. Too early. Too many fans spoiled by the freshmen that blow it up the first year, particularly the one and dones. I'll make a judgement on the class when I see what they are done through their senior seasons. Many a player that hasn't contributed muh as a frosh or soph is a integral starter as a junior/senior. Hanner showed some flashes of solid play this year, and JH might get it put together. Personally I would be a lot happier if we sat a lot of these guys for their first year, and mixed them in after that as they proved they had learned the system and were strong and composed enough for the B1G. This class may not amount to much in the end, but its WAY to early write them off.

In the next 10 years CTC will win a National championship here, or he won't. I'm pretty sure with all of his shortcomings I've seen trending the past 6 years, I will bet on the latter. I think I have a better chance of winning the billion dollar bracket challenge this year![/quote] If you had to bet your house on Michigan State, Ohio State, Michigan winning a championship in 10 years would you say yes to any of those? Loaded poll question you asked. It's hard to win a championship regardless who you are. I'd bet none of them win if my house were on the line. Sent from my iPad using BtownBanners

One year could be a fluke. Three is a trend.... I have always believe you can't judge a coach until he establishes his style. I believe it takes 5 years to get the right recruits to run your system. I give Crean a pass until the UK game. He was rebuilding. A lot of those recruits were but weren't his. Now, they are all his. So, I give him 2 more years. Same ol' same ol', need to start to look elsewhere. Two words of thought about firing a coach: Firing a coach early in his tenure at your school shows a lack of stability. This can be use in negative recruiting. Second , if you fire your coach, you better darn well know the next one can be better. Sent from my iPhone using BtownBanners

Contrary to popular belief I'd me amendable to firing Crean. If Crean seriously improved his in game coaching and I mean huge improvements I'd back off of it. Unfortunately he's done nothing to show me that'll ever happen. Sent from my iPhone using BtownBanners mobile app

I've been saying he deserves until the end of next season before we seriously look at other candidates. This all being said I am not very happy about what I perceive to be as mediocrity, and my fear is that this is going to continue with Crean. This is IU basketball, mediocrity should never been seen as acceptable.

  20. Thanks for making this thread, you beat me to it.. I'll copy what I said in another thread below: The way I see it, Crean got Indiana out of the basement of college basketball. But is he capable of taking the team to the next level? His body of work says no. He is a program builder, at this point not an NCAA championship coach. How can you miss out on a field of SIXTY EIGHT teams... as Indiana? And a field of 32 in the NIT... thats asinine. If the boosters can pony up the cash to get him out, fine by me... Thanks to Crean for fixing a mess and getting the program to a stage that it can be operable. I recognize his efforts but I also recognize his limits. His limit has been reached in Bloomington, its time to go get a stud coach.

I guess what I meant is that I have very little faith in CTC's ability to get us to the promised land. If we had a competent coach I think I would be more inclined to at least look at that bet. If you have no faith in the current regime, shouldn't appropriate actions commence?

Agreed, that's why in another thread that Crean needs 2-3 more years to prove either he can or can't recruit/develop. I am consistent. If I can't judge a freshman after his first year I can't judge a coach that started 3 freshman all year and lost 85% of his offense and 2 NBA players after 1 year.

Sent from my iPhone using BtownBanners

Yea, I could see that. He did get this program out from the utter terrible state it was in. IU can't become a revolving door for coaches. Ultimately I agree and think next year he will flop and IU will be looking for a new MBB coach. Lets hope it works out!
