Quinn Bucker Appointed to IU Board of Trustees

 Very pleased to read that Quinn has been appointed to the IU Board of Trustees.  IMO a well-deserved honor and someone who will be a very strong and positive voice.  [But I can't resist the snide comment that I wonder if he had to get Bobby's OK before saying yes or does his acceptance of the position mean he will no longer receive any Christmas cards from RMK!   And those snide comments are direct at Knight; not Quinn.]

I believe a lot of Knight's players have realized what he is and haven't asked permission to come back to IU. I though DD alluded to that last year when IU honored the 76 team.

This can do nothing but help.  I've said forever that the former IU administration (and perhaps President McRobbie) have gotten what they wanted by hiring Mike Davis and allowing the program to fall as it did.  Now?   We have a guy on the BoT who gets it and understands why it's important for Indiana to be good at basketball.  The men's basketball team is the window into IU for 98% of the world.  Sports programs do that for universities....and IU Basketball is as high profile a program as exists in the country.   Crean has made positive changes, and now the BoT is inclusive of at least one guy who will fight to keep the expectations high.   I can't think of a reason not to love this.

He's the president of a major university...he doesn't need to be constantly involved with basketball; he's got other issues to deal with. Still, why would he want the basketball program to fail? What connection does he have to Mike Davis?

He has been at IU since 1997. He became president of the university later. Not sure if he was part of the anti-knight group that pushed basketball to the background or not.

From 1997-2003, he was vice president for information technology.

So I kind of doubt it.

I just love when people take things to the furthest extreme possible.      Michael McRobbie spends nearly 100% of his time working on research grants.  That's what he does.   He's not into sports; and IU has had plenty of presidents who were.  John Ryan and Herman B. Wells, to be specific,

The IU administration made a conscious decision many years ago to go away from having a men's basketball coach or program that was - in their eyes - bigger than the University.  Which was foolish because it wasn't, but it WAS the world's window into IU whether they liked it or not.   McRobbie may or may not care about that, which is why I said "perhaps McRobbie,"    I don't know how he feels about the basketball program; but I do know his mission is for IU to be a top research university, if not THE top research University in the midwest if not the country.  Whether or not he understands the role the basketball team plays in his ability to achieve that goal, I don't know.  I DO know the BoT has played a major role in hiring presidents who were as clueless as they were apathetic.  Myles Brand was a good hire from the academic side; awful for the athletic.  Herbert is a clown and always was.  He was hired for one reason and one reason only, and it's the same reason IU caved to Davis when he bitched about his contract.

Personally I think the amount of money they make off of students at Bloomington and their satellite colleges outweighs their profits from athletics but it would be nice to have synergy. I don't care if the president is a fan or not as long as the funds are being allocated to the department. Which they seem to be. While the program may be a window to the university the school didn't decrease in students. The amount of profit lost athletics is at best debatable. College basketball for us brings in around $50,000,000 a year. That isn't profit. I can't imagine the profit from attendance would be that great. Donation wise they have got huge donations in other areas. It's hard to say either way how much they have hurt when the team was down. This is a dental/medical/business school. Not just basketball. Those people make good money and donate too. Selfishly I want the university to put their backing behind everything. Without numbers in front of me it's hard to justify why McRobbie should do anything different.

Indiana was third in profit in the B1G in 2014-15.  That doesn't include tv rights which would be equal.  So my $50 million estimations would be high, unless I would include donations.
