The Schedule Wednesday October 31 at 7:00 PM ET: Indiana vs. No. 14 Michigan University Gym (2721 E 10th Street) | Bloomington, Ind. Home Sweet Home While construction on the new arena is being completed, Indiana will play this week at University Gym (2721 E 10th Street). While they will be playing in the same venue as last year, the atmosphere will be much different under first year head coach Steve Aird. "It will be a little different than most every volleyball environment in the country and that's by design," IU head coach Steve Aird said. We are hoping that when we finally get into the new arena it goes to a whole different level." Promotions and Atmosphere • Halloween with the Hoosiers and RIPUGYM Night. • All fans coming to the match are encouraged to dress in costume. • Best dressed costume competition with winner receiving Amazon Echo Dot. • Candy bags will be handed out for aces, blocks and other in-game feats. • Kids will have an opportunity to trick-or-treat around the gym. • A student tailgate inside the gym starting at 6:00 p.m. • IU drumline and DJ embedded into the stands. Notes • Indiana enters the match with an overall record of 14-9 and a mark of 5-7 in Big Ten matches. Michigan comes into the match with an 18-5 record and 7-5 mark in Big Ten matches. • Freshmen outside hitter Breana Edwards leads the Hoosiers in kill with 249. The number represents the most for an Indiana freshman since Jordan Haverly set the Indiana freshmen record with 446 in 2009. All-American Ashley Benson had 261 in her freshman season in 2007. • The Hoosiers have 236.5 total team blocks and 88 solo blocks through 23 matches. In 32 matches, last season Indiana had 188 total team blocks and 45 solo blocks. • Indiana has recorded 10 or more blocks in 13 matches this season. • Deyshia Lofton leads Indiana in blocks with 103. Lofton ranks 10th in the Big Ten in blocks per set at 1.17. That number tied for the second most aces in a four-set match in program history. • Freshman Lexi Johnson tallied a season-high 10 kills in the win at Rutgers. • Freshman Breana Edwards leads the Hoosiers with 21 solo blocks. That number is third all-time on the Indiana freshmen only records. IU Head Coach Steve Aird "Huge week with an important match Wednesday against a great team. One of the last times we are going to be at home and at University Gym, so we are having an RIP UGym event in conjunction with Halloween, with some surprises up our sleeve. I think the students and fans are going to have a blast and we are looking forward to Wednesday night." "Michigan has some fantastic talent. We are at home and you've got to be competitive at home. We have competed like crazy at home and the environments have been great. The community and student section and everyone that shows up, I think that is what is making it a more difficult place to play and we are hoping that Wednesday everyone comes out and supports it the right way." Popular Post Class of '66 Old Fart Posted November 14, 2018 Popular Post Posted November 14, 2018 Emily Fitzner (yes, Evan's sister) and MaxPrep's 12th ranked player has committed to IU. I’m so excited to announce that I have verbally committed to play volleyball a Indiana University! I want to thank my family, friends and coaches for the endless amount of support through this process! I can’t wait to be a Hoosier! Leo, HoosierAloha, VO5 and 10 others 10 3 Quote
mamasa Posted November 14, 2018 Posted November 14, 2018 ^^ That's really exciting! I remember when Evan signed- there was a mention of his sister playing volleyball. I honestly never thought she'd come here, since she's kind of an elite player (no knock on Aird, but IU isn't exactly a vball powerhouse, yet). Glad to have her! LockdownD Posted November 14, 2018 Posted November 14, 2018 This is a great pickup. I believe Emily is a 6ft setter who has also played outside hitter. She's come from winning programs, club and HS. The Big Ten is the power conference in women's volleyball and Ms Fitzner is coming to an up and coming program in a big time conference. Exciting times. This is the new Indiana.
