Student attendance

Recommended Posts

OK, maybe I'm misunderstanding here, but you know ahead of time that it's GA right? If you don't get there early, the best seats will be filled. That's how it works. Leaving the balcony empty is begging to have the section reduced, especially when there is a wait list. Every school has some court side seats saved for donors. Duke and MSU are no exception. It's about $$$. Also, those schools only give students about a third of the seats we give to our students, so you may not even get a ticket there. If I were in charge, I would put students behind the benches on court level and leave the other side for donors. But, I'm not.

I'll never understand this generation. You got to school at IU but don't want to attend games? Cut the student section in half and sell those tickets to the average fan.

They'd be bought and I'd almost guarantee the seats would be filled. Especially with the way we are playing and the fact that we are 6-0 in the B1G right now.

This is why admissions needs to focus on Indiana kids who "get it".

If anything admissions would focus on kids that are out of state. A university would rather take the more than 3 times tuition of the out of state kid. Universities need diversity not just all Indiana kids who "get it", plus some out of state kids know more about Indiana Basketball than Indiana kids.

Not about getting it. It's about this is what we do. There is a reason why 9 of the 10 largest high school gyms in the US are from Indiana. Because we showed up when they were being built. It's not a matter getting anything. It's what Indiana people like to do.

As others have said, it's not just an IU problem. Hell, when I was an undergrad I would skip Sycamore games to watch the Hoosiers. And student attendance at Indiana State is FREE! I love going to live events, but some, like my father, who got his undergrad at IU and his masters at Butler, would rather watch on TV.

I don't know what the solution is. Again, kids at State don't go to games, and it's free. Will winning more repack Assembly Hall? Maybe, but who knows.

I would like the see the SAB step up their efforts a bit. You look at the student sections at school like MSU and UK and see a unified group that takes pride in themselves as well as the team. Unified cheers, chants, shirts, stuff like that could draw more students to feeling like they're actually part of the game. So far, we have a (in my opinion) extremely lame assembly to in the summer to teach freshman how to do the "fist-blades" thing and chant "first down Hoosiers!" Then they throw some old KOK shirts on the seats some nights and call it a job well done.
What if the SAB attempted to create some traditions and unified actions for the student section? Bring back the point system for getting priority tickets, and turned out student section into something more than an apathetic group of spectators!
I've been to most home basketball games all home football games from 2011-2014. Besides the cheerleaders and band, none of the students know what's going one when cheers start. I love how MSU students have the "Izzone." They're honored to be in there, why can't we do something similar?
Before anyone says "but we shouldn't HAVE to go out of our way to draw students to games!" I agree. But this can't hurt. At the worst, it turns the games into less of a speciation and more of an experience for the students who actually go.

Hate on me if you want I saw the writing on the wall as soon as the student section sang jingle bells during free throw attempts earlier in the year.

What? That was funny. The band has been doing stuff like that for years to distract FT shooters. That's creative and we need more of that.

Hey if the general consensus was that it's a good idea then have at it. I personally thought it was mad corny. But that's just me.

Of course it's corny. They weren't doing that because they were overwhelmed with holiday cheer and wanted to go caroling, though. But, to each their own.

that could be direct correlation to Indiana HS basketball games, kids graduating and taking it to IU. In Christmas tournaments that is a go to chant for HS kids.

I spent a couple years as student section leader in HS. When you get creative with themes, in game rituals, & chants for certain things that happen kids get involved.

For example; we posted a 3 on the wall every time we hit one, air ball obviously, shot clock, themes galore, roller coaster, prize give always for most spirited row, and tons more. Social media hype brought up a ton of new kids. Coordination of events and spreading info made it better and more exciting. Had weekly votes for theme for weekend games.

I couldn't tell you how many times my senior year the administration said we were too rowdy. i give all the success to social media!

Points system for IU would be great.

Taking over my Jr year we had on AVG 50-75 kids a game, by the end of my senior year we had 175+ most games. Topping out at 325 in sectionals. Attendance was monitored!!!!

How can we take topics from here and present them to the actual student section? Is there an organization that runs it?

Watch the band if you're at a game. They do a lot of this sort of thing. When we make a 3 pointer, you have to high five every single person around you. We cheer loudly with the cheerleaders. Unified cheer after every made FT. If you get every single person doing the same thing, it will pretty much always look good. Even if it's singing Jingle Bells to distract FT shooters.
I think it's on he Student Athletic Board to get this started. Get them on the students behind the basket and then work on the GA section.

More empty seats today...what's the excuses students? Too early of a start on a Saturday? Too sunny?

This team is on a 12-game win streak and atop the Big 10...this team demands your respect!

As sad as this sounds, the noon start time actually is too early for some students. When I was in college, I knew guys who were up until 4 or 5 a.m. and struggled to get out of bed by noon. I'm not an early riser myself, but I couldn't stand stuff like that. Total waste of a day to sleep that late.

I always loved listening to my fellow students whine about being out til 3 am like it's their job.

Noon is not too early.
