The NCAA doesn't have subpoena power so if you self report you're making it easy for them.

BREAKING: Louisville basketball will be implementing a strict curfew. Tests, such as BAC breathalyzers, hair follicle drug screens, and the smelling of fingers will also be performed on a nightly basis. Coach Pitino is administering the finger smell test himself. Reason being, "If anyone has a nose for this type of thing, its me!"

Hahahaha!!

Don't even get me started on how ridiculous this entire system is from a legal perspective. People (including myself) complain the NCAA is far too light on some schools and too harsh on schools that self-report, but at the same time the NCAA is totally castrated from doing anything useful. They don't have adequate administrative procedures in place and they lack the bite to compel compliance with the procedures even if they did have them. The whole system needs to be reworked to be more adjudicatory with actual discovery and punishment for not fully cooperating with all investigations. It should be set-up closer to the criminal justice system in general. It's just a dog-and-pony show right now. I'd be more worried brought up before the student disciplinary committee at IU than being a school brought up before the NCAA.

With those changes, it would allow things like reduced punishment for self-reporting in a "plea bargain" kind of way.

Rick Bozich - "This Is One Mess Pitino Can't Fix"   http://www.wdrb.com/story/30307084/bozich-this-is-one-mess-pitino-cant-fix

Best part:

"As I've written before, Rick Pitino is an information addict. He likes to know everything about everybody. Being detached works for some coaches. That is not Pitino's style. It never has been.

He knows the percentage of body fat on every player and how many protein shakes they have taken from the training table. He knows when they're spotted in places around town that he has told them to avoid. He knows when they come to the practice facility to launch extra shots.

As one observer quipped on Tuesday morning, the old Rick Pitino would have known the percentage of body fat on every dancer."

Yeah, I don't know how he escapes this. No way he should.
