The Coaching Thread

Recommended Posts

Here's a place for us coaches to discuss what we coach, and swap drills and stuff.

Last season was my first year being a head coach in any sport, but I coached 10u boys baseball. We lost every game last year, and I had a difficult time staying positive.

This year, we had 5 returners and not sure what I truly had coming in with new players. We went 9-3 and took first place in our league. We also played in pre-season tournament before the season that hosted our division and a division above us. We played the champions of the tournament twice, and lost both times by a combined 3 runs. The champs were a division above us, but we played them very tough.

Couldn't have been prouder of my team and coaches who did phenomenal. We are playing Fall Ball that features 3 divisions, so we will face teams that are two levels above us, so I'm excited to see how we stack up against them :)

Who else coaches?

I had a stint with elementary 5th and 6th grade boys basketball a few years back.  Up until a couple of years ago, I coached soccer with the little kids.  I'm not much on the uber competitive scene (which, believe it or not, elementary here is), and I enjoyed teaching the fundamentals.  I have too much of a short fuse with the pushy parents to keep coaching, lol.  Hats off to all of you who make that difference it the lives of our young athletes!

I coached tee-ball last year when my son was 5.  This year I coached 'sluggers' baseball.  6-7 yr olds.  It's a transitional league from tee-ball to coaches pitch.  We are gearing up for fall ball.  At this stage the kids are still learning fundamentals and there was even a couple who had never played ball before ever.  It's a combination of teaching the basics, holding a bat, throwing a ball, catching grounders, glove positioning (above waste/below waste), and lots and lots of patience!  The kids are awesome as they are out having fun, but I am really itching to get to the next age group that is a tad more competitive.

My team played in a tournament this weekend and we took first!!! It was a tournament that a baseball organization put on that my team is a part of. Ironically, the championship game was played against a fellow organization team. That should have been a ton of fun, but the other coaches and fans ruined a lot of the game. One coach and fan yelled almost every pitch at the umps, trying to bully them.

A lot of my parents want to leave the program because this team has been a part of the program for awhile, and we don't want to be associated with that kind of stuff.

Anyway, the boys played the best game of their lives. We were down 1-2, took the lead at 3-2, then pulled away in the final inning to win 8-2.

I was coaching my sons minor league team a few years ago. Coach pitch and the coaches were supposed to be honest as umpires. I was in right field instructing the outfielders per league rules. We are up 1 with 2 outs in the last inning. Kid from the other team hits one towards third but clearly foul by at least 2 feet. Their third base coach glances at me standing right there then starts waving kids around. They score 2 runs and win the game. Big party at home plate. I never said a word but that coach avoided me at handshakes and the rest of the season like the plague.

Same league same season had a coach who started over at the top of the lineup every inning. His kid lead off, lol. I'm coaching third and about the 5th inning I have to get between the coach and a couple parents whose kids were at the bottom of the order and haven't batted yet. I was never so happy as when my son gave up baseball and focused on soccer, lol.
