(2015) C Caleb Swanigan to MSU

Recommended Posts

Well, this is disturbing. Swanigan is an elite in-state talent and we need talent to compete. However, the baggage that this kid apparently has on him makes me question his recruitment. Caleb, the kid, may be a talented, hard working, good student athlete. It's this guardian/agent situation that is frankly a red flag. Barnes sounds like a handler and Caleb is a business venture. Ugh.

Some Utah guys say Barnes put the halt on his move back to Utah. CS lived within a mile of Utah's campus previously. IU has prioritized him since this spring and they certainly have insight into the situation with Barnes and Caleb's family. I think it's okay. Not sure of our real chances, but he is the kinda guy where if you are in his top 4, or so, you don't get out of the recruitment, you go for it, imo, esp. given the circumstances.

We'll see where it leads but Izzo is going to be tough in this one.

Ok, let me add a few things.  I have been away and didn't see the questions until now.  Barnes is a guardian.  Most elite players have a handler, that part is not unusual.  Caleb is going to one of the nicer areas and public schools in this area.  If not the nicest.  I don't want this to sound racist in the least, because I don't mean it to be.  Homestead is the whitest school in the Fort Wayne area.  Southwest Allen county is the rich of the rich in Fort Wayne.  For Caleb to go there, from a handler, there would be some recruiting going on behind the scenes.  Hell, Huntington North did it for lesser talent before.  I look at it as a chance for Caleb to go to a nicer school without inner city feel.  He can truly concentrate on basketball and only basketball there.  I don't want to speculate on his upbringing to this point, but this to me seems like a basketball move by his "guardian/handler".  I truly hope this doesn't sound overly racist, because I don't intend it to be.  But, if you knew the area, you know why a kid of this type of skill went to Homestead.  There is Homestead and then there is Canterbury as neighbors.  One you have to pay for.  The other is public.  But, public in that area is the rich kids of Fort Wayne.

Caleb Swanigan (@Biggs_Swanigan) finds motivation following LeBron James Skills a Academy: LINK

"According to Swanigan, Indiana has “mellowed” its recruitment of him. While he said he heard from Indiana a lot, early on, “as of recently, I haven’t heard too much.”

The possibility of playing for the Hoosiers, though, is something that does intrigue Swanigan.

“It’s right there at home,” he said. “And Bloomington is a great atmosphere playing there. I’m real close with James (Blackmon Jr.) and I just know they have a good program there.”

Are we sure that Caleb Swanigan should be a priority?  Caleb Swanigan has a guardian who he lives with...this gent:

ROOSEVELT BARNES Contract Advisor/Partner
As a three-sport standout at Purdue University and a Detroit Lions linebacker, Roosevelt Barnes, Jr. learned what it takes to make it in the world of professional athletics. It is this knowledge that helps Barnes relate to his clients and advise them on what to expect when they begin their professional careers. Barnes began working with Eugene Parker in 1987, primarily in the recruiting area. Since then Barnes has become one of the top contract negotiators in the industry, receiving record-setting deals for his clients. Barnes was instrumental in developing Relativity Football’s team approach to sports management and works closely with the entire staff to ensure that his clients’ needs are being met. Roosevelt was the first agent in the industry to develop a draft preparation training program for his clients and still mentors each of them through this process. Although lighthearted and easygoing, Roosevelt takes his role as an agent very seriously. He works tirelessly in his pursuit to maintain the Relativity Football standard of excellence and because of this has become highly regarded by those with whom he has worked. He has negotiated many of the top contracts for Relativity Football’s clients.

I know it's uncool to quote one's self; but heed this prior post. Caleb Swanigan's legal guardian is a professional sports agent.

If that's why we are backing off...

Then good for us.

Stu, that would make some sense if we hadn't prioritized him in the spring eval period. The Barnes thing has been out for years, so I'm sure Crean and Co. knew at that time if we did. Idk if I can get any more info here but I'll try

I'm hoping that it was a "look into the situation and into Caleb" type deal when Caleb was 14 years old. Now that it's go-time, if the situation has a bit of an odor and we're not interested, that's more than OK by me.
