Hoetzel to transfer

Recommended Posts

I don't know how it's Crean's fault here? They obviously liked him enough to make an offer, which makes complete sense. He's no bum by any means. And Max obviously liked Crean/IU enough to accept it and move to Bloomington, Indiana.

And I have no clue what you mean about not knowing how good he is or how to use him. He's a freshman, so he played standard freshman minutes. He didn't do much to impress anyone when he got on the court, but that's the standard progression of a freshman. Unless your a nationally rated guy or an otherwise special talent, you won't make an impact for a few years.

I'm guessing Max just got homesick and thought he'd better off at a school closer to Cali.

Where's the harm in any of this?

my point is they didn't scout him IN GAMES before signing him. Due diligence???

Not surprised by this. Max is talented but needs time to develop into a better player. Player development is not one of Crean's strengths.

My guess is that Max goes to Utah ( where he had an offer ) or San Diego State ( which was interested but didn't offer ). UCLA is also a good possibility.

I'm not sure where you're getting the info that Max wasn't scouted in games prior to the offer, but do you really think Crean allowed him to sign without doing his due diligence first? Crean, the anal, extremely intense, perfectionist signs a player without watching him play? I doubt it.

I love the argument I see from people which essentially goes along the lines of "he wasn't that good" everyone thinks all our players are awesome until they transfer, then they suck. If you can't allow for player development of 3 star guys we are always going to suck

Exactly. If Vic had transferred as a freshman, he wasn't any good either. Had no basketball IQ, couldn't finish at the rim and had terrible handles. Being a friend of Mo was the only reason we took him to start with. There's a reason he didn't have any other high D1 offers...

Assuming that this is even true....

Hoetzel's not the first and won't be the last guy to be offered and accept before a coach sees them play in-person. But the idea that Crean blindly offered him a scholarship is laughable. Obviously there was tape, scouting reports, just speaking with him and his coaches. Plus, they saw him practice while they were recruiting Goodluck. That's the whole reason they found him in the first place.

And same goes for Crean... he's not the first and won't be the last coach to offer a scholarship to a player before seeing them play a game in-person. Scouting is a lot more than just watching games in person.

According to IDS Max would have red-shirted if not for DD injury.  I think he would have been a good player and wish him well, I am just not sure he was/is as good as he thought

You would prefer a player to transfer and give no reason at all? That's the shadiest way a player could possibly handle it.

Max wanted to play at Indiana. He didn't get many minutes his freshman year, understandably. But that doesn't mean he never would have. He just wanted out. Maybe it was homesickness? Maybe he things he's better off at a school with less pressure? Or a mid-major type school? Or maybe he's a quitter? Who knows?

he has 700,000 dollars to scout his guys. Wouldn't YOU want to see a guy live in game action before offering him one of your coveted 13 scholarships?
