How bout a pump fake?

Recommended Posts

What has happened to the lost art of using the pump fake to get the shot off or draw a foul? Why does every kid no matter his size think he can out jump the opposition on a drive to the basket? A simple pump fake is a fundamental sorely lacking in todays game IMO. Thoughts?

Believe it or not, we agree!   It's an invaluable resource when used properly (not on every possession).

One of my all time favorite players was Adrian Dantley.

King of the Pump Fake,6'5'' and unstoppable in the paint. You could roll him into the thread on the mid range jumper also.

Few if any were as proficient as he was with both

Good topic and interesting thoughts, I agree with what VO5 and Laz stated. All about athleticism now and little patience. No more pump fakes, and the FT shooting is what really gets me. Someone tell these athletes that if they could shoot, that's how you become a legend. Athleticism AND shooting/fundamentals.

Fundamentals in general are lacking in today's game. I blame a lot of things: AAU coaching and culture, the lure of the NBA ( gotta get those highlights on SportsCenter and move on to the pro$! ), and the lack of patience we as a society seem to have these days. Fundamentals take time to learn. They take practice. Hard to do when you're checking out or posting on your latest high-tech gadget very minute.

I agree 100%. AAU coaching and wanting to be on Sportscenter. We have two players that seem to suffer from SportsCenter fever on our squad. They would rather make a big highlight play than play fundamentally sound.
Sadly I dont think it will ever change here in the US. All the while in Europe they preach fundamentals and coaches who run European style schemes and teams continue to have lots of success in the college game and in the pros.

Bo Ryan seems to be the only one teaching a pump fake anymore. My dad and uncle preached it to me growing up. As a small forward during my playing days a drive to the baseline or in the lane followed by a good pump fake got me many a basket against taller and more athletic competition.

It didn't hurt that at 6'5" he had Yogi's build which was rare in the 70's.
