Potential coaching change suggestions

Recommended Posts

That is like a huge drop off

He would definitely be a risk just becuase he has not done it at this level, but look at his record. He has won 4 National Championships and been to 5 more Championship games. So 9/16 years coaching he has been in NC game. I know these are at the D2 and NAIA level, but he can only coach the teams he has and so far in C-USA he has done pretty well winning 20+ games every year he has coached (full season).

* I do not ever expect this to happen, I am just playing devil's advocate. I graduated from KWC where he won 2 of his Championships so I am definitely bias, but I will tell you I really hope he does not end up in B1G playing IU twice a year.

Sounds similar to Bo Ryan's pre-Wisco resumé.

I don't see Bennett coming here after the way his sister was treated when she was coaching at IU.

That and he has all ways been considered  the frontrunner as successor to Bo at Wisky.

As much as it pains me to say the reality is Wisconsin has replaced us as the premier program in the Big.

Virginia is in a recruiting hotbed and is the No1 team in the ACC. I really think he's a pipe dream.

Alford Bailey, there was a Sports Illustrated article about Howland at UCLA that was written a few years ago. Pretty brutal. He basically lost control of the program. Maybe unfairly, that article really hurt him, not only at UCLA, but afterwards. He hasn't been able to find another coaching job. He's available!

Thanks. Couldnt remember what happened. No need to chance it there will be plenty of good candidates, imo.

Ben Howland is an interesting option. Dont remember what happened at UCLA. He is a great coach, though. Petty confident he would get us back to final four. Will have stew on that one a while.

There was some really nasty hazing/abuse done by the upperclassman towards underclassman. Came out the Howland denied having any knowledge of it, but if you read the SI article on it, its pretty nasty. It kind of gave of a Sampson vibe where he only cared about what happened on the court and nothing else. Howland had 0 control (or didn't care) over his players off the court. No thanks on Howland

Plus he was IU's number 1 candidate seven years ago and wanted nothing to do with us, I doubt much has changed

Seems like there were tons of player issues, like worse than Sampson-teams player issues.

Athlon Sports College Basketball Expert Poll Question 2: Which coach is early in his career now but will be considered a top-10 name in the next decade?

IIRC, when Howland was coaching at UCLA, Reeves Nelson punched out John Wooden's grandson ( a team walk-on ) during practice. A lot of other ugly stuff was going on as well. Read the SI article if you get a chance. It's sad because Howland is a talented coach.

Reeves Nelson was the nutrient of nuts and Howland certainly didn't handle him the way he shouldve. However, most of Howlands issues were related to Nelson for the most part and I'm sure Howland has spent the last few years reflecting on and learning from his mistakes at the end of his UCLA tenure. I'd also think that time and a new location would help Howland overcome the recruiting issues that occurred in LA.

Just look at how many successful pros he developed. The players may not have shined brightest in his system but they were sure prepared to succeed in the NBA.

There are also very few coaches who are as good of an in game coach as Ben Howland. It's very very rare to find a coach as great as Ben Howland so available. He would get IU back to a final four within 5 years, I have no doubt.
