ALASKA HOOSIER

The fans aren't going to the games?

Recommended Posts

I am from PA, my dad graduated from IU in 1976 and I grew up with IU Basketball as a major part of my relationship with dad.  When it came time for college I could have gone to Penn State or IU.  I decided that IU was the place for me carrying on my family tradition.  For 5 years I lived, worked, played and spent a decent amount of money going to college in the State of Indiana.  Went to every single game while I was on campus and the team was consistently losing by double digits.  Was very involved on campus working and in volunteer roles.

But sure call all east coast student jackasses and say you have no respect for them on the air.

He did say his daughter is going there next year.  I pray that she meets and brings home a boyfriend from Long Island.

Dakich calling east coast students jackasses right now.

I never really have had an opinion on Dakich, I think he knows his basketball and I think he has his spot in IU basketball lore. But he clearly doesn't have a grasp of what out of state students bring to the University from diversity, more money, and increased reputation. If he wants IU to be a school ONLY for Indiana residents the school would lose an awful lot of prestige, notoriety, etc. I'm fine with it being a school MAINLY for Indiana residents, because its a state university. But to discredit contributions made from out of state students is naive and frankly wrong.

Some of the most passionate fans I know are from D.C. Houston and Charlotte and Atlanta. Some of the most passionate fans I know are from South Bend, LaPorte, Fishers and Fort Wayne. At the end of the day, sports fans are going to be sports fans and the school has so much more than basketball these days the student body is made up of less "sports people"

We get even more money from international (especially Chinese) Students.  A decade ago it was all Korean international students. After the Korean economy went to set, it started transitioning into a crapton of Chinese international students. I've befriended a bunch during my time at IU, and trust me, some of them have plenty of money to blow.

Edit: Majority of these international students are much more into the NBA rather than CBB and all NCAA sports in general.

His statements just scream total cluelessness on this topic.  He says that east coasters are ruining IU which is completely absurd.  A diverse campus community with students from across the globe that bring different ideas and perspectives is GREAT for Indiana University.

As far as fans I agree with you assessment.  I lived in a house with 6 guys, all from out of state and we went to every game, every year.  Nearby were two houses full of other guys that we hung out with a lot.  All 10 of these guys were from Indiana and never got season tickets and never went to a game.  His straw man argument is just totally dumb.

ALSO, the dude sends his son to Michigan, which has built a reputation of being an elite public institution by accepting a ton of out-of-state and international students.  He pays out-of-state tuition.  I doubt he thinks students like his son are ruining Michigan.

Dakich is full of it on this subject. Out-of-state students who are into CBB are just as rabid IU fans as in-state students.

I do think international students generally lack the love of CBB that US students have but some do become fans after they have been at IU for a couple of years. Even if they don't, they add to the diversity and prestige of IU as a major university. No doubt about that.

This is why DD kills me. I hate that guy.

I'm an East Coaster through and through. I have been to multiple LAX games. Heck, my best friend from IU was from a different East Coast state and actually played scholarship LAX. You don't get more East Coast bona fides than that. We're both huge IUBB fans, we're both donors. And now, Dakich wants to get on my sack about not being a big enough fan? While he slobbers all over OSU and Michigan and sends his kid away from the school? Come off it man.

I hope he gets hit by a falling metal sheet.

Let's fill the Hall tonight, people! It's friggin' Game DAY! Let's get pumped and whoop some Boiler B#%&(s!

Why haven't I seen any battle plans from you? Just because rebel is gone doesn't mean things aren't going to be running or did we just let the thread die.
