Thinking out loud about our big man situation....

I loved the Boonville sectional---- that place rocked----I remember when the great South Spencer team went through there with Kenny Perry on the way to the semi-state and was unbeaten---25 and 0---until Terre Haute South with Cam Cameron and Thompson knocked them off in a thriller. Both those high school teams had front lines bigger than IU's. That was something to see.

Huntingburg gym is great too.

I've watched many baseball games at Huntingburg's league stadium which is where they filmed "A League of Their Own" with Madonna----it still looks like an old fashioned ballpark

----chair back seats--- it's like you've walked back in time. A great place to relax and watch a game. The Dubois County Bombers semi-pro team plays there too.

Good times.

Wow, a Kenny Perry reference!

Really enjoyed you boys talking about the old gymnasiums and the memories that they evoke. I'm a basketball junky that grew up knowing that on Friday night everyone in the community would be attending the local high school basketball game. It was a social event with a visiting community that showcased community pride in their basketball team. Bragging rights meant something! Our sectional site was at Martinsville at the old Glenn Curtis Gymnasium. The participating schools would rotate seating around the floor each year. Seats were numbered and if you weren't careful, you'd buy a ticket behind one of the several posts that were in the fan seating.
If you really enjoy knowing more about Indiana's gyms, I highly recommend "Hoosier Temples: A Pictorial History of Indiana's High School Basketball Gyms" by Donald E. Hamilton. Love this book. It helps explain the fascination Hoosiers have with these gyms and what role they played in their communities.

The class system achieved it's goal of letting small schools win more titles----but we lost something along the way.

We lost the David versus Goliath match-ups----the stuff of the movie Hoosiers---and the excitement that comes with that.

No more MIlans -----so now we have more titles but the titles in my opinion don't mean as much.

In the world I grew up in we didn't dream about winning A state title-----we dreamed of winning THE state title.

Sorry---more ramblings from an old school basketball junkie!

class basketball is just what is needed...

I mean...we have class College Basketball...D1, D2, D3, NAIA...

and it works perfectly...

why shouldn't we do the same for High Schools?

Don't ruin my mojo---I am waxing nostalgic!

A lot of people like class basketball---I am just not one of them.

I am just an old school basketball purist!

rebel...

a high school that has 300 enrollment shouldn't have to prove their worth against a school that has 3000...

come on, man...

in 1955...it may not have been that big of a disparity...

in 2015...those schools will NEVER compete with each other...

edit...if anything...consolidation ruined class basketball...

My sectional and regional was in huntingburg's gym (I played at Forest park) every year. We also played Southridge there every other year so I got to experience that gym quite a bit. Balled there 20+ times. It was by far my favorite place. Also got to play in boonville's gym a few times as well. Also a really cool gym

True.

You Rangers have had some recent success.

How many of those Hopf boys do you have over there in Ferdinand anyway? :)

Agree with you on consolidation being the culprit that caused class basketball to change..

it absolutely did...

there are entire counties that are a school (corp) now...

as opposed to small communities that used to rally around their team...

honestly...that's why Borden Basketball is lava hot right now...

small town fighting consolidation...

wins state Championship...

fuels feel good fire...

I was actually on the team whenever we went to semi state 2 years in a row, only to be knocked off by yogi both times. Those were my soph and junior years (I'm a youngin

I agree with you in bigger team sports like football.

But in basketball----no matter how big the other school is----there are only 5 on the floor at one time for each team.

What if a small school has that once in a lifetime team----wouldn't you want the chance to beat the big boys?

The way the class system works right now---we don't get that chance---and we will never truly know which team actually was the best basketball team in the state each year.  I think that's sad!

I get what you are saying...

and I respectfully disagree...

Jeffersonville will beat a team like Perry Central 1000 times out of 1000...

why? because they have 2000 males to choose from versus 200...

it didn't used to be like that, but it is now...

Perry Central should never have to compete against Jeffersonville the way that IUS shouldn't have to compete against the

University of Louisville...

So---if you played on a state championship Borden team that was the best team you ever had in school history---are you telling me you wouldn't want to take on a state championship Washington Hatchet team and go against Zeller or go against a big Indy team with future D1 players? Wouldn't you want to settle on the court just who the best team in the state was that year?

My last question for you ou812dude is-----did you experience and do you remember one class basketball?

I have seen them both----and there is no comparison in my opinion.

But---I respect your opinion---class basketball does give small schools a better chance to win state titles.
