B1G tournament at MSG

Recommended Posts

Noooo! I don't have anywhere to stay for free in New York! I'm going to have to rent a place for the tourney. Lame. Thanks for nothing Rutgers.

exactly...

why would a Midwestern based Conference have anything to do with New York City?

It feels like Delany is turning his back on the Midwestern fanbases - new office in NYC, tourney in NYC. And maybe I just don't understand the economics of it, but I don't see how moving the tourney to NYC benefits the conference. Was it not going to be on TV if it was held in Chicago/Indy? Will new people watch it simply because it's on a different court and is being played at the same time the mid major conferences are playing their tourneys? I'm not a fan.

Delany is a joke. This is a desperation move. Other conferences( ACC, SEC, Big12) have moved far ahead of the B1G with this conference realignment. We got Rutgers! I mean who is left in that area that would be a good pickup for our conference? Nobody! Yea, there is some alums there but really more than Indy or Chicago? Boycott this NYC thing. Don't let them steal your money like that.

Unfortunately, boycotting the tourney won't matter. It's a TV thing and attendance is just extra money for the venue and the B1G.

I've got no problem holding the tourney in NYC every 3 or 4 years, tons of B1G alumni in the metropolitan area. Holding the tourney a week before selection Sunday is stupid, any way you slice it.

The only option B1G teams would have to stay sharp is schedule a non-conf. cupcake or two in the week between the early tournament and Selection Sunday; similar to $EC football scheduling cupcakes in November during their bye weeks to stay sharp but have an easy opponent to work on details.

^^^This

Additionally, how about looking at it from the perspective of the players? I'm sure the players love the idea of spending consecutive days in DC/NYC considering many of these kids have probably never even visited. Yes, having the tournament primarily in Indy/Chicago is best. However every few years in DC or NYC is a novelty for the plenty B1G alum in these major metropolitan areas. Which will bring in additional revenue for the conference.

Ending a week prior to selection Sunday?  We'll be starting the B1G season around Christmas.

I hate everything about this,

I disagree. College basketball has so many fluff games and crappy tournaments played in empty Caribbean armories the first two months, that this could eventually push towards a shorter regular season. College basketball's start date has crept up noticeably the last few decades. Why not start conference play earlier as well?

I think that this mentality coincides with the influence the CFB playoff is going to have on that sport, with less OOC games, more focus on the conference slate, and accomodating for the longer season and increasing amount of games the playoff will bring.

As someone who thinks that conference tournaments are nothing but worthless cash grabs for any power conference other than the old Big East (as that one became a fun tradition), I also like that there will be a bigger gap between the BTT end and the NCAAT beginning. Particularly with Big 10 style of play, there's no need for these kids to beat the hell out of each other for four straight days and then expect them to just turn on the jets right away for a much more important tournament.

Honestly, in NCAAT seasons, I usually find myself hoping that IU shows up for a part of the tournament to maintain some momentum, but ultimately ends up losing by the third round and avoids playing 2-3 unnecessary games right before the moment of the season every has been building up towards. It would be like a runner running a 10k the weekend before the Summer Olympic marathon event. Stupid all around.
