Troy playing the 5...? and let's talk about how IU fans have a better "IQ" than other fans..

You look at your personnel, then let's talk about basketball IQ. Devin is no more of a 5 than Troy, but since he is all we have you just plug him in there. When Hanner gets into foul trouble after 5 minutes gone and then Devin shortly thereafter, what is Crean gonna do. Play a true undersized frosh? Maybe, these are Creans players he wants for his team. If we go to a four guard lineup which is our only strength and Troy's not a guard, are you gonna leave him on the bench. I'm trying to win with our overmatched and undersized roster. Your thinking Holt at 5 will get us killed. Thinking outside the box is part of bball IQ. And yes, IU fans and alumni have plenty of it. What's your excuse, play an unpolished Jurkin.2?

Why would we play Troy at the 5 over DD and Holt if HMP ran into foul trouble?

What if Hanner and Devin are both in foul trouble? Holt won't get minutes in B1g play. If Crean wants to win this year to keep his job, he better play his best 5 at all times. Unfortunately, it sounds like 4 of them are guards. Yogi, Stan, Rob, JB2 are 4 of our best players who are guards. Do you sit Troy for Devin or Holt? Don't think so. All I hear from you is Crean loves a guard heavy team etc... Well, he's got one. Troy won't be sitting regardless of who else gets minutes. It will be interesting to see what Crean does this year. He has to win, his sub patterns will shrink, and he will have to play his best players. No more excuses right?

Troy has displayed zero ability to post up or defend against a bigger bodied traditional 5. DD and Holt both have the strength to better defend some one who is a height mismatch. Holt was brought in to play the 5 when we need him to.

I'd love to hear from basketball4iu how Holt has played at the 5 in practice, and how everyone has been utilized thus far.

Of all of our returning players, who has shown the ability to do what you just said Troy can't? No one. That's why Crean will have to utilize a lot of zone defenses to keep from our small guys getting abused underneath which still may not work. I second your question about how everyone is being utilized though. I would surmise Crean still doesn't know how to use his current team based on how he used his best players last year. You have to play to your strengths and underutilizing Noah last year proved Crean didn't do it well most of the time. That and settling for 3 point shots from Yogi and Will. Crean did get it right against Wisconsin, and his gameplan for them was spot on. See, I will give him credit when credit's due. He has his work cut out this year.

Hanner and DD both have shown they can handle the 5 if they have to. We saw DD bully some guys on both ends of the floor last year. Troy really solely operates as a perimeter/wing player.

I have stated before that I don't think Noah's lack of use was as much Crean's game plan as it was his inability to demand the ball and get open, but we'll disagree here.

I mostly agree with this. However, I saw times last season that DD got abused defensively playing the 5 mostly due to height. Hanner will be fine at the 5. Actually, I think he'll be great at the 5.

All of our other choices to back him up have question marks.

DD---Height?
Holt--Height? Experience?
April--Skills? Experience? Injuries?
Priller--Skills? Athleticism? Strength?
Troy--Bulk? Skillset? Height?

There is a good reason we were seriously trying to add Kasongo to THIS roster.

However, I think if Hanner can play 25-28 minutes a game we will work it out. I think DD gets the majority of the backup minutes at the 5. We will need to prevent the entry to the post and double up on mismatches when DD or Holt are at the 5.

I don't remember DD bullying anyone last year. If memory serves me correctly, he got fairly abused down low on the defensive end last year. His rebounding is good, but he regularly got abused defensively on the block.

I'm not saying DD was able to shut anyone down, but he was able to use his weight to at least put up a fight at the 5. He did a fair job for being undersized. My point is that DD and Holt are better suited to play the 5 than Troy.

Hanner only has an inch or so on Holt and DD

2 inches and +~(2-4) inches on a vertical makes a big difference.

I just know what I saw last year with Hanner compared to DD on defense at the 5. DD was at his best at the 4 and was exposed defensively at the 5.

And that being said, I hope/expect DD's experience and bulk to have him better prepared even if we need to use him out of position......

DD did better than expected last season for being a 3star FRESHman playing mostly out position. I have really high hopes for DD, just wish we had the "luxury" to play him more at the 4.

DD exceeded my expectations last year and I think he only gets better here on out.

He's a little undersized but cam make up for it "The Moye Way"----with strength, hustle, heart, and determination!

I think DD brings those traits to the battle and I look forward to watching him!

Troy playing the 5...? and let's talk about how IU fans have a better "IQ" than other fans..

Maybe you and apologist1 both should check your statements regarding Troy playing the 5 and basketball IQ specifically. I just looked at some video of our Canadian summer trip and the first clip from the very first game shows guess who playing the 5. Yep, it was Troy. Go check it out youself over at ITH. JB2, Yogi, RJ, Z and Troy against Lavalle or something. What's funny is it is at the very start of the video so you won't have to watch long to see Crean obviously feels differently than you about Troy playing the 5. Now I know you will say Hanner wasn't there etc... but once Hanner gets into foul trouble and then Davis doing the same; you will see Troy get some 5 with a spread offense. Not so far fetched niw is it?

another variable in that game was that Lavalle had no one over 6'7 on the roster. That won't be true 98% of this season.

You mean the same Canada trip that Hanner couldn't attend, April was in a boot for, and was held prior to Holt signing with IU? If that was the situation for the upcoming season, I'd agree that Troy would be playing the 5. But it's not. So yes, I still argue its a worst case scenario and pretty far fetched. It took a visa issue, injury, and a late signing for us to see Troy play the 5. If the team literally had DD, Priller and Troy as the only 6'7" ish guys like it did in Canada, obviously Crean is going to play Troy at the 5. Luckily, we have three players who are better suited for that role than he is.
