Best Pure Shooter/Best Scorer In IU BBall History

Recommended Posts

Calbert had the prettiest shot ever, lefties have the stroke. Brian Evans had a pretty shot as well. Gotta mention AJ Guyton dude has the school record more most games in a row hitting a 3, plus B1G player of the year. But my picks for shooter are Roth (recently) and my guy Leary, just watch him come off the bench cold vs Duke as a freshman with Cheaney, Graham, Henderson, Reynolds, and whoever else was fouled out & down by double digits. Dude hits everything, no problem. Not the best skilled put he can shoot, no lie.

Jay Edwards gets my nod as the most pure shooter.  He was absolutely unbelievable, and his game was perfect for the motion offense.  He had great size at about 6'5" and he got great elevation on his jumper and he had perfect form.  People can barely remember him anymore because he only played two years and he came to IU right after we won the Title in 87.  We had Jay, in 88 and 89, who was the Mr. Basketball out of Indiana, we also had the Co Mr. Basketball, Lyndon Jones, Jay's teammate from Marion, but he was not the scorer that Jay was.  Jay always had a reputation of being quite the party boy, and there are a lot of rumors going around about him.  To you youngsters, Jay came out after his Soph year and was drafted in the 2nd round at around 28th I  believe to the LA Clippers.  Injuries hampered his career, but if he played all 4 years at IU he would have broken many scoring records.  His game was kind of like Reggie Miller's, because he was long with good size and unbelievable range.

As far as the most pure scorer, I'm trying to think of someone who can just fill up the Stat sheet without necessarily having plays ran for him.  While Calbert scored a lot of points, he really had to do with help from picks and back screens.  His game was never isolation and just score, which is part of the reason he was a career 10 ppg scorer in the NBA and not the 20 ppg that we were used to seeing.  It's different at the next level when you have to get your own in a shorter shot clock without the help of screens.  So back to the most pure scorer, I'm going to go with Eric Gordon who could absolutely fill it up, either from Deep, or in Transition, or around the basket, all while being a Freshman.  Can you imagine the stats that he would have put up if he stayed in College for more than one year?  Can you imagine the stats that he would have put up if he played in an Offensive system that was more advanced than Sampson's elementary sets?

Honorable Mention goes to:  A.J. Guyton who was a great shooter and had a great cross over to create space for his Jumper

Steve Alford, I can barely remember him because I was just a kid, but his jumper was automatic.  He had a quick release and he was great at running around screens in the Motion Offense.  Looking at a guy who wasn't much bigger than Jordan Hulls it's crazy to think that he put up over 2400 pts in the Big Ten Conference.

Good analysis John Robling.  Can you imagine if Edwards and/or Gordon had stayed around a little longer! The one and dones and two and outs don't quite give us enough time to get to know them or build the body of work to reach legend status in the program. Still--we're glad to have them when they come!

I will second Jon Roblings post and say Jay Edwards as the best pure shooter I have ever seen at IU. He had so much arc on the ball the twine barely moved. I will also second the part of his extra curricular activities, but that was in the day before cell phone cameras thank God. I don't know how you young guns like to play these days, but it seems everybody's watching. I'm happy my days came before this invention.

Yea man, they would have put up crazy numbers.  I think Jay Edwards would have had a chance to beat Alfords record of all time points at IU.  Of course Cheaney later broke it, but Jay might have beat him to it.  Eric Gordon was the best freshman that I've ever seen play at IU, and I've watched a lot of IU basketball.  He was a man amongst boys that year.  He was big and strong and what seperated him from other athletic wings was the fact that Eric had DEEP 3 point range.  He would make a three pointer early in the game so you had to get up on him, and then that is when he would start posterizing dudes.  It stinks that his injuries have limited his ability at the next level, because he had/has a chance to be a special player.

Not sure, but I know Evan Gordon was not very good.  Crean gave him a lot of playing time last year, and he really did nothing well.  At his size you would think he'd be a point guard, but he couldn't handle the rock that great, and he definitely couldn't make others better.  He was not really a great 3 point shooter, and he was not overly athletic.  He was just a guy, not much better than a walk on.  You take him, and Austin Etherington who was scared to shoot and when he did shoot it was a brick, and Will Shehey who couldn't hit 3's for much better than 30% a clip, and Stan Robinson who can't shoot and airballed Free Throws; well it just goes to show how bad our Perimeter Game was last year.

Jon--hated liking your post but it was so true. This is exactly what I have been saying. It's amazing we did as well as we did last year because our guard play which is how you win in the Big and NCAA was poor.  It will be different this year and I am so looking forward to it!
