Louisville Recruiting

Recommended Posts

People hang there hats on our 1 5 star and occasional 4 star. It is Crimson Colored Glasses Syndrome. Just for fun, go look at UNC, UL, UK, Florida, Arizona, OSU etc rosters. They barely have 3 star players on the entire 13 player roster. That creates more challenging position battles in practice and better teams on every level. Even though most teams only play 8-9, those other spots are building for THEIR time and bettering their teammates. Believe me, we are light years away from OUT Talenting these teams. Can we beat a better talented team? Sure. But consistently? No. Their is a reason why we are predicted 7-10 placed in the BIG this year. Can we outperform that? Sure, I hope so, but..............

What an insightful post. Two things have to change. Better recruits and better coaching. All of the rest is just wishful thinking.

I think the It's Indiana slogan is loosing its luster.
Kids want to play for winners and right or wrong I dont think that is the perception today.I also feel the roster turnover is a real negative and used against us in recruiting. We are recruiting as we speak and dont have a spot open.Someone might leave to play for pay but I dont see it.That means a transfer and could very well be a homegrown kid leaving. That will start burning bridges with  high school coaches in the state. It cant be a good long term approach to recruiting. I visit other sites sometimes being a basketball junkie and there is a lot of fun poked at CTC.Kids read these thing too.
We need to win this year or it's only going to get worse.I think this is a make or break year for us.
All that being said i hope we kick some ass this year because CTC has a lot of qualities I admire and don't see much of if any at either program just south of the border.

Another insightful post. Its Indiana means winning and winning brings recruits. The roster turnover is a big negative when you're signing players who are already being overrecruited over and the burnt bridges of high school coaches when they see real loyalty from Ann Arbor with the kid involved in the plane crashes. Perception is reality. As some may say here we're not the same Indiana they need to ask why is that. We have the best facilities, history, and academics so what is lacking? Oh, I forgot fans and alumni too. What's very apparent to most including recruits and high school coaches as well as some of us here will be denied by #1 apologists to the bitter end. Its not that we don't want the current staff to be successful, its that we have seen a 6 year sample that its not and things going forward look more of the same.

I live in the Louisville area and the media has been talking a lot about the shoe companies. They interviewed Jerry Meyer about the Blakeney decommitment. Meyer said that it is possible that Blakeney, a Nike AAU team member, choose to reopen his recruitment because choosing an Addidas sponsored school such as Louisville could cost him the opportunity of playing in the Jordan Brand All American game and the Nike Summit World games. All the remaining schools on his list are Nike schools. To rub salt in the wound also, pUKe is one of those on the list. Unfortunately for the athlete, he loved UofL. The rest of his entourage does not.

Again, this shows why I trust Crean. The kids we get are here to play ball and are not worried about crap like that.

I wouldn't be so sure of that. That is a consideration with the majority of the highly ranked kids. Not the only one but there are kids who won't consider us based on that or vice versa. It's an in on a kid.

Just thought I'd give you some facts to read regarding our roster turnover. On top of transfers, we've also sent 3 players to the NBA early, which while great for the players and program, adds to roster turnover issues. If you actually read the article though, you may see that our transfer rate is nothing out of the ordinary. Enjoy.

You may want to reread the last sentence from this article. As long as success remains, the problem is minimal.

I read the sentence. Did you read the rest of it? We do not have a unique issue with transfers. I'd argue that Zeller and Vonleh both leaving early for the NBA and IU not having an adequate recruit to replace them is a much more harmful roster issue than Austin Etherington or Remy Abell transferring.

Not sure why players like mo creek and Matt Roth are not factored in as this is my biggest grief. Running off players that would have added veteran leadership, meanwhile constantly using youth as an excuse. Also doesn't mention all the guys on the team crean inherited that he wanted to stay and wouldn't, ron Patterson and Austin etherington.

If we had a veteran squad and a winning squad then this wouldn't be an issue, we had neither.

yes, this is a huge problem too. These issues combined make for a huge issue. Add in etherington alone to his stats and see where we fall in that equation... Crean is one of the conferences worst offenders

some losses are good losses.  some aren't.

Will Holt be better than Hollowell?  We hope!

Will Zman be better than Etherington?  We hope and expect.

Was Evan Gordon better than Abell?  Maybe/Maybe not.  Probably a wash.

Was Evan Gordon better than Creek?  Probably not!

And in Hollowell's case and some others we must factor in chemistry issues.

If Hartman transfers and we get Og Anunoby in his place, is that an upgrade?  YES

HOWEVER, losing players early to the NBA is most critical and damaging.

Bold. Hartman hasn't had a real chance and we have 5 minutes of highlights on OG.

No one can ever knock Crean with the whole Mo Creek situation. The guy got a million chances at IU. Crean gave him chance after chance and I think in the end he saw that the coaching staff was too worried about his injury history to give him the playing time he thought he deserved, so he transferred and did fairly well (albeit at a much lower competition level).
Same could be said with guys like Hollowell and Etherington. Hollowell was a freakin starter for part of last year but had no inklings of desire or fire in him at all. Etherington, a "shooter" that passed up every open shot he probably every had. I think Crean grew frustrated with him because of this as well. I honestly think the only reason he played so much last year was because of our lack of depth, nothing else. He looked scared out there! I didn't lose sleep about any one of these transfers and no one else should have either.
Crean is not running players off, but a lot of the time players can read the writing on the wall. they can stay and ride the bench (deservingly) or transfer somewhere else and play. I think it's for the best in both situations

I don't agree or disagree with what they are saying but the Jerry Meyers of the world know a lot more about recruiting than I do. There are a lot of articles written on the subject. It could all be coincidence for all I know.

-Zeller and Ferrell were both snubbed by the Jordan Brand game while both were chosen for the McDonald's Game which is sponsored by Adidas.

-Vonleh and Blackmon Jr. got selected to play in both All American games.

-Williams was passed on by the McDonald's game but was chosen for the Jordan Brand game. The opposite of what the gurus think. I believe Boo Williams and Nike are linked together though.

-Jurkin played in a Jordan Brand regional All Star game in Charlotte, NC. of North Carolina prep players. I couldn't find anything else on him.
