IU vs ISU Post Game Thread

Recommended Posts

Coleman was a beast! Roberts was good as a back up as well. I was happy with the defense, they got consistent pressure on Perish.... something that has been an issue for us in recent years. Other than a run or two we held their running game in check, can't really analyze the corners too well.

Ugh, Sudfeld. I've never been the biggest fan of his, and today didn't do a ton to instill more confidence in me as a fan. Hopefully he proves me wrong. And we need to get better separation from our wide outs

I just found myself wishing Tre was here for the entire game. Not necessarily bashing Suds, but I miss Tre.

Can I like this a million times. That's the only thing I thought about all game

Oh, offensive line. Run blocking they were outstanding today. Pass blocking they left room for improvement, I don't know if it is our pass blocking scheme or what, but I've questioned for the last three years if it is really does the greatest job of supporting us throwing the long ball. Which is a big part of our offense

Coleman and the offensive line were outstanding for the running game. Significant talent reduction at RB after Coleman. He's a game changer. If he goes pro early, running game probably won't be quite the same next year. Most likely RB by committee. Would have been nice to hit the open receiver in the end zone. I expect the passing game to be better next week. The defense played well.

It's RB by committee now, but hopefully Coleman gets the bulk of the work in the bigger games.

I felt that way about Latimer and Hughes a lot today. Last year if Nate or Tre got in trouble they could throw it either one of those guys' way and they be able to make plays on the ball, Cody did a lot. Doesn't feel like we have a play maker at wide out like those two right now

Thought Booth could be that guy...but not sure he was even in Bloomington today. I did like what I saw from Simmie Cobbs.

The 34 yard catch he made was real nice. Actually went after the ball, rather than waiting for it to come to him. I've always liked Wynn, but he might not have the physical tools to be the guy who goes out and makes the big plays in traffic.

I know he was talking this week about not getting everyone's hopes up because he would be double teamed until they found another weapon in the air.

Defense looks better.  The offense actually frustrated me above all else.  Obviously we dominated on the ground but didn't translate it properly into points.  My biggest frustration was the number of passing players where Nate tucked & ran the ball.  Just seemed really odd, like our receivers were not capable of getting open consistently against Indiana State?

I did enjoy the smashmouth running approach though.  Coleman is beastly.  I think his number of touches worked out just about right, sure you could have given him more plays but save some bullets and wear & tear for more important games.

Yes it is, but probably to a greater extent when Coleman leaves, unless they can find another stud RB to replace him. I concur that he should get a greater percentage of the carries against stronger competition.

Sudfeld just looked scared and uncomfortable. Everyone in the crowd would yell at him to throw every time they didn't run and he just didn't get the ball out quick enough. I don't think it was the receivers weren't open or the blocking. Just looked like something was off with Sudfeld today.

I was at the game today and came away with the following impressions:

We ran the ball.  We ran the ball a lot.  A LOT.  69 times vs 18 passing plays according to the box score.  Even stripping out 5 or so rushes for the broken plays where Nate ran or was sacked, we still ran the ball better than 75% of the time today.  I don't know if that was to build confidence in the run game or not give too much away before the next game, but we didn't throw until the 2nd half really.

Coleman looked good, as we know he is, and he absolutely tore up an inferior defense today.

We have some talent at TE supposedly, but I didn't see it utilized today.  The WR's are young and I did not see much that says the corps will be anywhere as good as last year.  Not throwing very much may have prevented the passing game from getting into a rhythm but it seemed like our WR's struggled to get separation.

KR needs work.  The fumble aside, our return man seemed intent on making a fair catch at all costs when he probably should've let a few go over his head.

The defense looks marginally better.  The Dline looks to be better than last year.  The CB's will be an area of concern most likely.  One thing that stood out to me is that our CB's and DB's regularly gave a 10 yd cushion at the line to the WR's they were covering.  One 3rd and 2 for ISU even had our guys playing 10yds off the line.  A strange scheme if you ask me.

There were a few times I and some fans seated near us were scratching our heads over play calling.  At the end of the first half we called time outs to stop the clock presumably but then proceeded to run out the clock and not take shots down field before the half expired.  Seemed odd.

ISU played hard but were largely outmatched.  A good warm up type game I think and now a week off to work on some things.

If anyone wants to make the trip down for a game and has 4 in their party, I highly recommend the family 4 pack ticket deal.  $100 gets you 4 tix, 4 hot dogs and 4 soda's.  A good deal considering the cost of everything.

The offense was off, nothing more to say there.  Sudfeld wasn't sharp, the receivers weren't getting separation, etc.  Although the running game did look good in what looked to be a concentrated effort to run it down their throats.

Defense looked a little better, although it couldn't have gotten any worse than the travesty that Doug Mallory engineered last season.  I don't like seeing the 10 yard cushion from the DBs, but I guess I'll take that over the 15 yard cushion and not being on the same continent when the catch is made of last season.  I expect growing pains though switching to the 34, next few games will be interesting to judge growth vs better competition than an awful ISU team.

I've seen people say the defense looked good, but it was against ISU so I'll wait until we play a good team. I didn't watch the game do I'm going my hear-say.
