Assembly Hall = 34th best college stadium? SAY WHAT?!?

Recommended Posts

I think the fault in the analysis is how they are looking at it. Is Assembly Hall one of the best arena's from a pure spectator view? Almost definitely not. I view Assembly Hall the same way many people view Wrigley Field, it may not be the nicest place out there, it may not be the most comfortable, but damnit when you go there for the first time you will ALWAYS remember it.

This is a FANTASTIC comparison. It isn't the best in the viewing, but it is an experience like no other.

The article fails because it says it can't be renovated...even though it's about to be renovated. And despite its quirks, the only obstructed views are of the videoboard under the balcony, and they already installed monitors under there to take care of that. They are also replacing all the seats (including some wider ones with no armrests for better accessibility) and the giant red railings with plexiglass as part of the upcoming upgrade.

Ask any top ten team whether THEY think it's 34th?

This is an excellent point. The way AH was built, all of the noise concentrates right to the floor. Sitting first row for UK was the loudest experience of my entire life. When Oladipo dunked my brain blacked out the noise because it was too much to handle. I don't remember what it sounded like when the shot went in because my mind went in to shock

Vic gave me one of those moments and I was never able to explain it. But "brain blacked out the noise" is exactly what it was. Completely mind blowing.

Freshman year. Top row of Balcony. Stood on our seats the entire game. I'll never forget this game, crazy I still love a game we lost.

My blacked out noise moment... 7:40 remaining in the game, Marco goes coast to coast for the slam. Place was shaking.

And IU fans would still kill to get those seats!  That's what makes Assembly Hall and IU fans!

I agree IU Hoosier41---Assembly Hall (I still can't call it by its new name) is iconic! As a young kid it blew me away when I attended my first preconference game. And then in college it went to even another level when we played a ranked team or big ten rival. I have been to many other arenas/stadiums and there is nothing like THE HALL !  I do like the renovations that are coming but I am glad they decided to keep it around.  I love seeing the mountain of people on each side, feeling the building actually move from the noise, and the feeling of my ears still ringing half an hour after leaving the game! It may not be the newest or most modern structure,  but it is what college basketball is all about!

Utah State got 5th........ pretty sure this dude might have really, really, wanted to have more people reading this. I guess goal accomplished.

Michigan is in the top ten, which is laughable. They have a lot going for them, but going to Michigan to play, their fans and stadium is one of the last things that concerns me

Assembly Hall is the best place in the world to enjoy college basketball. No contest.

Hinkle comes in second for its atmosphere and history.

The history of the building maybe. But the atmosphere is pretty dull. Back in the mid 2000's that place was usually no more than half full. Last season they had pretty poor attendance numbers especially for students.

You still can't beat a big time B1G game there though, even in years like last year. But yeah, non-cons and some lower B1G matchups are definitely pretty dull.
